In Mykolaiv, a 2-year-old boy drowned in a bathtub
Investigators determined: the mother closed the drain, left the water running, and fell asleep in another room — she returned to her son only two hours later
In Mykolaiv, law enforcement officials announced suspicion against a 23-year-old mother after the death of her two-year-old son, who on the morning of April 7 drowned in the bathtub in the family’s home.
The regional police and prosecutor’s office reported the incident and the procedural actions.
According to the investigation, the woman left the boy in the bathroom with the water running and the drain closed, after which she went to another room to rest and fell asleep.
Returning about two hours later, the mother found the child without signs of life. She pulled her son from the water and tried to provide assistance, but the medics who arrived on the call pronounced him dead.
Investigators established that the child had been left unattended for a prolonged period in a bathtub filled with water. According to preliminary expert findings, the cause of death was drowning (mechanical asphyxia); no external signs of a violent death were found.
The woman’s actions have been qualified under Part 3 of Article 135 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — abandonment in danger that led to the death of a minor child. The article’s sanction provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to eight years.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
