In the first nine months of 2026, 27 people in Mykolaiv Oblast died from HIV infection and AIDS. During the same period in 2025, these diseases claimed 33 lives.

This year, 71 people were diagnosed with AIDS for the first time, compared with 79 during the same period last year. A total of 230 HIV infection cases were registered in the region, 53 fewer than last year.

Sexual contact remained the most common route of HIV transmission. The figures for the reporting period, compared with January–September last year, are as follows:

  • 204 people contracted the virus through sexual contact, compared with 252 last year.
  • The virus was transmitted through blood to 25 people, compared with 29 last year.
  • Mother-to-child transmission was recorded in 1 case, compared with 2 such cases last year.

Among those newly diagnosed with HIV infection this year:

  • 142 men — 166 cases among men were recorded during the same period last year.
  • 88 women — last year’s figure was 117 cases among women.

In September 2026 alone, 19 new cases of HIV infection were identified in the region, and 7 people were diagnosed with AIDS for the first time.

HIV can remain symptom-free for a long time, so people often do not know their status. That is why it is important to get tested regularly, use protection during sex, and avoid risky practices.
