Broke the window with a brick: man robbed a café in Mykolaiv

In Mykolaiv, a man smashed the glass in a café’s entrance door with a brick after midnight, broke inside and stole more than 1,000 hryvnias and 2 mobile phones from the till. According to the Mykolaiv Oblast Police, a 30-year-old resident of Odesa Oblast was involved in the theft. He has also been notified of suspicion of illegally entering a private house.

A private entrepreneur reported the theft during the day on October 18. He contacted Police Department No. 1 of the Mykolaiv District Police Department. Officers established the circumstances of the nighttime break-in at the scene, while the café’s surveillance cameras recorded the man’s actions.

Specialists from the Regional Police Criminal Analysis Department helped identify the suspect. Within 24 hours, law enforcement officers identified the man involved in the theft and tracked him down on one of the city’s streets. Investigators detained him under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

During the investigation, police established that the same day the man had also entered a private house where no one lives. He did so by breaking the lock on the front door.

The stolen money and phones were recovered from the detainee. They are to be returned to their owner after the necessary investigative procedures.

Under the procedural guidance of the prosecutor’s office, investigators notified the man of suspicion under the following provisions:

• Part 4 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — theft committed under martial law;
• Part 1 of Article 162 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — unlawful entry into another person’s premises.

The suspect faces up to 8 years in prison. The court is expected to choose a preventive measure for him soon. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
