River water for Mykolaiv is treated around the clock despite shelling
The laboratory checks quality at each of the four stages
Before reaching the homes of Mykolaiv residents, river water undergoes 4 main purification stages at the facilities of Mykolaivvodokanal Municipal Enterprise. The water is treated around the clock despite shelling and technical difficulties.
Contaminants are removed in sequence, after which the water is disinfected:
- Coagulation and flocculation. Special reagents are added to the river water. They cause the tiniest particles of silt, clay, and dirt to bind together into larger flakes that are easier to separate from the water.
- Sedimentation. The water is then directed into special tanks, where heavy contaminants sink to the bottom under their own weight.
- Filtration. Impurities that have not settled in the tanks are removed as the water passes through filters containing special quartz sand. It traps the tiny particles left after sedimentation.
- Disinfection. At the final stage, purified chlorine is added to destroy harmful microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses.
The treated water meets safety requirements. The laboratory monitors its quality around the clock at every stage of purification to ensure that tested water reaches residents’ homes.
