A woman must pay more than 145,000 hryvnias in compensation for an illegal catch in Mykolaiv Oblast
He Was Also Sentenced to Probation for Illegal Fishing in the Berezan Estuary
A woman found guilty of illegal fishing by the Mykolaiv District Court must pay the state over UAH 145,000. The damage was caused by catching fish, shrimp, and crabs in the Berezan Estuary in the Mykolaiv region.
In addition to compensating for the damage, the woman was sentenced to one year of probation supervision. The court also ordered the confiscation, in favor of the state, of the prohibited fishing gear and other property used in the offense.
The illegal fishing took place in May near the village of Viktorivka, while the spring spawning ban was in effect. The woman set a gill net and a fish trap in the water. Using this gear, she caught:
- crucian carp;
- gobies;
- flounder;
- shrimp;
- two green crabs.
Experts calculated the amount of damage caused to the state. The State Environmental Inspectorate of the South-Western District acted as the injured party in the criminal proceedings and filed a civil claim for compensation. The court upheld the inspectorate’s claim in full and ordered the woman to pay the calculated amount to the state.
