Cut down 9 trees in the Mykolaiv region — received a 5-year suspended sentence

The verdict was issued in 2024; the damages have already been compensated

Illegal cutting of trees in a protective forest shelterbelt in Mykolaiv Oblast caused damage to the state of over UAH 90,000. As of 5 October 2026 the man whom the court found guilty of this offense had already fully reimbursed the assessed amount.

He felled the trees in February 2023 near the village of Sebyne in Mykolaiv district. Arriving at the protective forest shelterbelt with a chainsaw, the man, without a special permit, cut down 6 acacia trees and 3 oaks.

The amount of damage was calculated by the State Environmental Inspection of the South-Western District. The correctness of the assessed sum was also confirmed by a forensic economic examination.

The verdict in the case was issued by the Novoodeskyi District Court of Mykolaiv Oblast on 27 February 2024. The man was found guilty under Part 4 of Article 246 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: illegal felling of trees in protective forest plantings caused grave consequences. The sentence imposed was 5 years’ imprisonment with a 2-year probationary period.

In addition to the criminal punishment, the court fully granted the prosecutor’s civil claim in the interests of the state. The reimbursed funds were directed to the environmental protection fund of the Kostiantynivska rural territorial community.
