The company ArcelorMittal has reported that it is currently unable to safely and sustainably restart operations at the ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih plant in Kryvyi Rih. This is stated in the company’s statement dated 25 September 2026. Over the past 5 weeks the plant has suffered 4 missile strikes. The most recent attack occurred on 21 September. In total, these strikes have killed 5 employees, 17 others were injured, one of them remains in critical condition. The plant’s production facilities sustained significant damage.
The company said it is discussing the future of the plant with the Ukrainian government. ArcelorMittal plans to focus on preserving the plant’s infrastructure so that it remains possible to restart production in the future when the security situation permits. Due to the damage, ArcelorMittal expects a non-cash impairment of assets of approximately USD 1 billion. The bulk of this amount is related to the impairment of property, plant and equipment of ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih.
Since the start of the full-scale war, the company, it said, has provided the Ukrainian plant with more than USD 700 million in financial support to ensure continuity of operations.
Thus, ArcelorMittal is not announcing a permanent closure of the plant at this time, but acknowledges that under current conditions it is not possible to safely and sustainably restart operations. The company plans to preserve the infrastructure until conditions allow future restoration of production.
