Fires decreased, but fatalities increased: the blaze claimed 35 lives in Mykolaiv region — State Emergency Service report

Since the beginning of 2026, 3465 fires have been registered in Mykolaiv Oblast. This is 24% fewer than in the same period last year, but the number of people killed and injured by fire has increased.

During this period fires claimed the lives of 35 people, including 1 child. The number of fatalities rose by 17% compared with last year. 50 people were injured, including 11 children. The number of injured increased by 14%.

The State Emergency Service provided a breakdown of fires by location:

• 2464 cases occurred in open areas;
• 557 fires occurred in the residential sector;
• 181 fires were registered at facilities;
• 173 incidents occurred on transport.

The most common cause remained careless handling of fire. The distribution by established causes is as follows:

• 2360 fires were caused by careless handling of fire;
• 384 cases were related to violations of fire safety requirements;
• 88 fires were caused by arson;
• the remaining fires occurred for other reasons.

Russian shelling was a separate factor: since the beginning of the year, as a result of enemy attacks on the territory of Mykolaiv Oblast, 455 fires occurred.
