У Mykolaiv parents of young patients at the regional children’s clinical hospital drew attention to overgrown stands of ragweed near the building where children with respiratory conditions and allergies are treated. According to them, while staying in the inpatient ward some children reportedly began to have more difficulty breathing. Former director of the Mykolaiv Regional Center for Treatment of Infectious Diseases Svitlana Fedorova spoke about this in a video on her Facebook page.

According to Fedorova, mothers of children who are in the allergopulmonology department began to contact her. The women said that, despite treatment, the children felt worse in the wards and complained of difficulty breathing. Similar sensations, they said, also occurred in adults who came to visit the children.

“We came to the hospital, and the children get worse despite the treatment. The children are suffocating,” — Fedorova paraphrased the words of one of the mothers.

Later, as the video’s author claims, one of the women noticed the vegetation outside the department’s windows. There, she said, they found tall stands of ragweed. In the published footage Fedorova showed a neglected area next to the building and plants that, in her assessment, reach human height.

“Ragweed as tall as a person — right under the windows of the children’s allergopulmonology department,” she exclaimed.

Fedorova noted that she filmed the area from the third floor of the building, where pulmonology is located. This detail matches the information on the official website of the Mykolaiv Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital: the allergopulmonology department is indeed located on the third floor of the three-story building and is designed for 25 beds — 20 pulmonology and five allergy beds. There they treat, among others, children with bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis and other allergic diseases.

At the same time, there is currently no medical confirmation that the deterioration in the children’s condition described by the parents is specifically related to the plants near the building. Such conclusions can only be made by specialists after assessing the specific cases.
