29 August brought together shipbuilding, the commemoration of fallen defenders, and one of the heaviest Russian attacks on the city in Mykolaiv’s history.
29 August 1964: the thousandth ship was built in Mykolaiv
Local historical chronicles date this day as the completion at the Black Sea Shipbuilding Plant of the vessel “Mykolaiv”. It was called the thousandth ship built in the city during 175 years of Mykolaiv shipbuilding. The event was timed to coincide with Mykolaiv’s 175th anniversary.
29 August 2014: a date of remembrance for the defenders of Ukraine
During the withdrawal of Ukrainian units from encirclement near Ilovaisk they suffered their greatest losses of the entire operation. The sunflower — whose fields Ukrainian soldiers passed through — became a symbol of the commemorative day. In 2019, by Presidential Decree No.621/2019, 29 August was established as the Day of Remembrance for the Defenders of Ukraine.
29 August 2020: over 200 Mykolaiv residents ran for the fallen Heroes
In Mykolaiv the run “I Honor the Warriors, I Run for the Heroes of Ukraine” was held for the second time. Over 200 participants covered a distance of 3.8 kilometers, bearing the names of fallen defenders on their clothing.
29 August 2022: Russia fired 16 missiles at Mykolaiv
Russian forces launched 16 S-300 missiles at the city, 12 of which hit their targets. Two people were killed and 24 were wounded. Residential buildings, a school, and communal and transport infrastructure were damaged.
29 August 2023: Soborna Square commemorated fallen fellow residents
In the center of Mykolaiv a temporary installation of military boots and flags was set up in memory of the fallen inhabitants of the region. According to the data published then, more than a thousand soldiers from Mykolaiv region had already been killed defending Ukraine.
29 August 2024: the memorial “Forever in Formation” was opened
Near the destroyed building of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration a memorial to the fallen defenders was opened. Its central elements are two metal trees with commemorative ribbons and the silhouette of a family, through which the ruined building is visible.
Thus it remained in Mykolaiv’s history, 29 August: from the thousandth ship of the city’s shipbuilders — to the memory of those who gave their lives for Ukraine.
