They want to rename the "UGMK" stop in Kulbakino

In the Kulbakino neighborhood of Mykolaiv, the name of the transport stop “UGMK” may be changed. The corresponding proposal was voiced on August 26 during a meeting of the city council’s executive committee by executive committee member Vitaliy Posmitnyi.

Posmitnyi explained that the current name is reminiscent of the abbreviation of the Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company from Russia. At the same time, the Mykolaiv stop received its name in honor of the Ukrainian Mining and Metallurgical Company, which operated in the city before the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

“The name of the stop in the Kulbakino neighborhood causes surprise. Even before the start of the ATO we had an enterprise called UGMK — Ukrainian Mining and Mining Company, connected with metal. But today we know that UGMK is the Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company. It is not connected to Ukraine, and the stop’s name remained,” — said Vitaliy Posmitnyi.

According to him, the stop was previously called “School No.44“, but now that name no longer exists.

“The stop was called ‘School No.44‘, for some reason it doesn’t exist at all. If possible, change the stop’s name,” — proposed the executive committee member.

The vice mayor of Mykolaiv, Vitaliy Lukov, supported the idea of reviewing the name.

“Not that it can be done, probably it should be done,” — he replied.

Deputy mayor Yuriy Andriyenko said he will work on the issue together with the administration of the Korabelnyi District.

The Ukrainian Mining and Metallurgical Company was a large Ukrainian chain trading rolled metal and had, in particular, a Mykolaiv regional branch. The enterprise operated under the UGMK brand, but today PJSC “Ukrainian Mining and Metallurgical Company” has the status of a dissolved legal entity.

The abbreviation “UGMK” is also used by the Russian Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company. This is a separate company that is not connected with the Ukrainian UGMK.

In July 2024 in the Mykolaiv region, the renaming process was completed and new names for 411 streets and lanes were approved. In Mykolaiv, 49 streets and lanes that had duplicate names were renamed. The new names of settlements in the region, renamed in autumn 2024, are already reflected in the Google Maps service.
