Mother sentenced to 5 years for the death of her 4-year-old son in Kharkiv. The head of the Children's Services will be tried for negligence

In Kharkiv, a court sentenced a 29-year-old mother to 5 years in prison after the death of her 4-year-old son; the tragedy occurred on the morning of May 7, 2026.
The verdict was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General: the woman left two minor children unattended, as a result the boy fell out of a window, and the life of his 3-year-old sister was put at risk.
According to investigators, that morning she went to a side job, leaving the children alone in an apartment on the 4th floor; the boy climbed onto the windowsill, lost his balance and fell, and died from his injuries in an ambulance.
When law enforcement officers and rescuers entered the residence, a 3-year-old girl with signs of dehydration was also there, while the mother returned home only in the evening.
The court found that the accused knowingly left the minor without assistance, thereby causing his death, and also willfully failed to fulfill parental duties, which led to serious consequences; the woman fully admitted her guilt.
The child was provided with necessary medical care and placed in a foster family, while the issue of terminating the convicted woman’s parental rights is still being resolved.
During the investigation it emerged that this family had previously been on the radar of social services and the police: in 2023 the woman was already held administratively liable for improper fulfillment of parental duties, after which the child was temporarily removed, and the family was registered as one facing difficult life circumstances.
Law enforcement also gave a legal assessment of the actions of the head of the district children’s services: despite warnings about threats to the life and health of the children, she did not take the necessary measures for a long time; the official was charged with official negligence with serious consequences, she was removed from her position, and the indictment has already been sent to court.
