In the village of Lymany of the Halytsynivka community in Mykolaiv district, a quarantine regime was introduced following the detection of the South American tomato moth (Tuta absoluta Meyr.). This was reported by the Main Department of the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection in Mykolaiv Oblast.

The quarantine pest was found by state phytosanitary inspectors during a routine monitoring of the region. To detect it, specialists used pheromone traps. By order of the Mykolaiv District Military Administration No.87-r of August 3, 2026, phytosanitary measures aimed at localizing and eliminating the outbreak were approved.

The South American tomato moth mainly attacks tomatoes, but can also damage other plants of the Solanaceae family. Its caterpillars feed on leaves, stems and fruits, causing the crop to lose marketable quality and in some cases to die. With heavy infestation crop losses can reach 50–100% .

The pest reproduces rapidly and can spread with infested seedlings, fruits, soil, containers and packaging materials.
