Southern Europe could be covered in the coming weeks by the strongest heatwave of this summer, with the peak expected in late July — early August, reports the Polish outlet Twoja Pogoda.

The first signs of extremely high temperatures are already being recorded in the Mediterranean: the heat center has shifted from Spain to southern Italy, where on the island of Sardinia temperatures of up to 47 degrees Celsius have been recorded in the shade.

According to meteorologists, this figure is only 1 degree Celsius lower than the local record and almost corresponds to the absolute maximum temperature for Europe.

In the coming days a slight easing of the heat is expected in Italy, the Balkans and Greece, but daytime temperatures will remain in the range of 3035 degrees Celsius.

Experts warn that the cooling will be short-lived: at the turn of July and August a new heatwave is possible, when temperatures in the shade could approach the 50-degree Celsius mark.

If such a scenario is confirmed, Europe could record a new temperature high, making this heatwave the most intense so far this summer.
