He ran over a woman with a truck but remained at the wheel: in Mykolaiv the driver received a three-year suspended sentence
The victim died following the amputation of her leg and severe injuries
The Inhulskyi District Court of the city of Mykolaiv found the driver of a truck guilty of running over and killing a woman on Kosmonavtiv Street. The man was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, but was released from actually serving the sentence and given a one-year probation. In addition, the court did not deprive him of the right to drive vehicles.
The verdict was issued on 15 July 2026.
The fatal crash occurred at about 12:10 on 10 May 2023 near building No.53-B on Kosmonavtiv Street. The technically sound MAN TGS 19.400 truck with a Kogel S24 semi-trailer was traveling from Mykolaivska Street toward Myr Avenue.
According to the case materials, the truck stopped at a red traffic light. When the light turned green, the driver began to move without ensuring the safety of the maneuver and without reacting to the traffic situation.
At that moment a woman was crossing diagonally from right to left in front of the truck. She was crossing at an unmarked location. The vehicle hit her with the right footboard of the cab, after which the victim ended up under the front and rear wheels of the truck.
The woman suffered severe combined bodily injuries, contusions of the lungs and spleen, a fractured humerus, and multiple limb injuries. On the day of the crash her right leg was amputated at the mid-thigh level. Despite treatment, the victim died.
The driver’s actions were qualified under part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – violation of traffic safety rules that caused the victim’s death.
A day before the verdict, on 14 July 2026, the prosecutor and the defendant, with the participation of the defense attorney, concluded a plea agreement. The driver fully admitted guilt and agreed to the negotiated punishment of three years’ imprisonment without a ban on driving vehicles.
The court took into account that the man had no previous convictions, sincerely repented, is positively described at work, and reimbursed the deceased’s family for the damage caused. The driver also transferred 100,000 hryvnias to the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The deceased’s son agreed in writing to the agreement, confirmed receipt of the compensation, and declared that he had no material or moral claims. He also asked not to send the driver to prison and not to deprive him of his driving rights.
As a result, the court approved the agreement and imposed on the convict one year of probation. During this period he must report to the probation authority, notify about any change of residence or employment, and must not leave Ukraine without permission.
In addition, the driver was ordered to pay UAH 11,995.92 in costs for expert examinations. The verdict can be appealed within 30 days.
This is not the first case in Mykolaiv where a driver is released from actual imprisonment after a fatal crash. In May 2026 a court imposed probation on the driver of a Daewoo Lanos who fatally injured a 62-year-old woman at a crosswalk in the Korabelnyi district.
