The head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, Vitaliy Kim, said in an interview with “Ukrinform” that corruption proceedings against local officials harm the region’s reputation in the eyes of international partners, and emphasized: in Mykolaiv Oblast, heroism during the war does not give the right to ignore the law.

Commenting on how criminal cases against the mayors of Bashtanka, Pervomaisk and other officials affect the region’s image, the head of the RMA spoke unambiguously.

“Negatively. There are situations when officials become subjects of cases out of stupidity, and there are cases that are substantive. I make no exceptions of ‘one of us’ or ‘an outsider’. I have said and repeat: if during the full-scale invasion you showed yourself to be a hero and did the maximum for defense, that does not mean you have the right to operate outside the legal field. You must work lawfully and be accountable for your actions.”

Earlier, the announcement of suspicion against the mayor of Bashtanka, Oleksandr Berehovyi, became known on 19 August 2025 from a statement by the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Ruslan Kravchenko.

During the first court hearing the official fell ill, and the next day after the arrest ruling of 3 September he was released from the pre-trial detention center: as reported, his wife Yelyzaveta Berehova posted the bail. On 9 September the Bashtanka District Court suspended Berehovyi from office until 19 October; the mayor was elected from the political party “Servant of the People.”
