"There is suspicion that this is a scam," the family being extorted is searching for witnesses to the traffic accident in the Korabelnyi district

The driver who, in the Korabelnyi district of the city of Mykolaiv, struck a deaf-mute pedestrian Svitlana Lytovchenko (who was crossing Bohoyavlenskyi Avenue in the dark and, according to her husband, on a red pedestrian light), does not shirk responsibility – he helped, paid personally for the woman’s treatment, and is willing to provide her with financial compensation for the moral damage caused, but – within reasonable limits. At the same time, although the driver’s guilt has not been proven, the injured party keeps demanding money from him, and more, not recognizing any fault of their own in what happened. Moreover, the driver’s family suspects they have fallen into a scam, and therefore asks for help in finding witnesses to the accident – theirs and possibly similar ones.

“The accident happened at the intersection of Bohoyavlenskyi and Korabeliv avenues late in the evening on 13 January 2026, when there was no street lighting, and in fact no power in the area. The driver, Petro Vasylovych Khoroshyi – a person with 60 years of driving experience – was moving along Bohoyavlenskyi Ave toward Okeanivska Street on the green traffic light for vehicles… Approaching the turn by the ATB, he focused his attention on a dangerous stretch of road, because sometimes at that time underage children without lights cross the avenue. Turning, already near the pedestrian crossing, there were no oncoming cars, and suddenly – a shadow! He hit the brakes, jumped out of the car, and there by the crosswalk on the right lay a woman. The man ran up to her – she was alive. He called an ambulance and the police. The driver was in shock (77 years old, and after all these years something like this happened). The man reassured [those around]: “You are not to blame – she herself, in black with no identifying marks, without a flashlight on, walked into the middle of the road on red for herself, stopped, you approach – she accelerates, and that’s it.” The ambulance arrived first, helped place the woman in it, she turned out to be deaf-mute,” – the Korabelov.info said the driver’s wife.

“Then the police, examinations, witness statements… On 14 January my wife and I came to the hospital (LSMD) to talk and find out what help was needed. The woman was asleep; we were advised to see the doctor, but he was no longer there (works until 16:00). The head of the department gave us the phone number of the injured woman’s daughter: he said the daughter is not deaf-mute, deal with her, I cannot tell you anything. Leaving the hospital, we called the daughter and offered help. She explained that she was at home in the Korabelnyi district, gathering things to go to the hospital. We said we would come and give her a lift so she wouldn’t have to take minibuses to the hospital with her things; she agreed,” – continues the story of the driver himself.

A few minutes after this conversation, Petro Vasylovych received a call from an unfamiliar number.

“I pick up the phone, and there: “Do you realize what you’ve done, the woman is in a serious condition”… My wife interrupted the call: “Who are you?”. He replied: “It doesn’t matter, your husband hit a woman”… We asked: “Are you threatening us? Who are you?”. Again he says: “It doesn’t matter.” And so several times until we arrived and took the woman, and after she was in the car. The woman [the injured party] was asked why she gave our phone number to a man who won’t say who he is. Her answer: “He is a good friend of the family.” Silence the whole way, she was being called all the time… We arrived at the hospital, apologized, explained how everything happened, and said we would help as much as we could.”

After some time the injured woman’s daughter called the driver and reported that her mother had been scheduled for a CT scan that, she said, would cost 6,500 UAH.

“We took the money and went to pay… When we asked the medical facility how much the CT costs, it turned out to be 3,600. The young woman says: “I didn’t know.” How could she not know when she gave the price???” – the driver’s family wonders.

“Then – two complex operations on the injured woman, on the thigh and the shin. We asked the daughter how much they would cost. She said: “Approximately from 100–120 thousand UAH”. We said we could not afford such an amount, both are at fault, let’s split it 50/50. Again a phone call from an unknown man, threats: “…You will have problems.” Through acquaintances we learned that the operations would cost up to 90,000 UAH. Investigation, examinations, psychological pressure – nerves cannot stand it, sick leave,” – recalls the Khoroshyi family about the horror that fell on them.

When the injured woman’s daughter called them and said that the operations were scheduled in a week and money was needed, they no longer argued about the sums: “Alright, we will pay the bills via bank transfer.” But in response they heard: “No, cash.”

“No cash, only via bank, send the bills, we will pay and bring the receipts. The answer: “No.” After some time the daughter agreed, but: “Come pick me up and we will pay together.” We paid…”

The couple say they did not come to visit at the hospital because the woman is in shock and they do not trust her daughter. They thought that when she is discharged and the woman is in the Korabelnyi district, nearby, they would arrange for a translator and visit her.

“Investigation, examinations. They proved that the woman really crossed the road on the red pedestrian light; there is a witness testimony…

The woman was discharged on the ninth day after the operations and was taken to her daughter in the village of Veselynove. We understood that there would be no opportunity to talk. The young woman called some time later and said that money was needed for rehabilitation, because she had hired a massage therapist, etc. I said: fine, send the hospital discharge summary; if it says that rehabilitation was prescribed, we will negotiate. There is correspondence, but they did not send us the discharge summary. But it was needed for the insurance company as well; the car is insured for a good sum, and we mentioned that too. We agreed before the operation that there would be no claims…

02.03.2026 – a preparatory court hearing, reconciliation of the parties. We have a lawyer, they do too. The hearing began with a suit by the “injured party” (although who is guilty has not been established) – to recover from the accused 200,000 UAH for moral damages and 12,000 UAH for legal assistance. The injured party’s lawyer: we will substantiate it after the court hearing.

We came out and said: we have already paid more than 70 thousand UAH, she is also at fault… How so? We have good insurance. The answer: the insurance later, the woman was injured, rehabilitation was not prescribed by the doctor, they decided it themselves… We offered 120 thousand. In response: “How will you prove that these funds will be paid?” This is humanity, this takes into account all pros and cons when guilt is not proven…”, – recounts the Khoroshyi family.

A court hearing in the case will take place soon. The woman’s lawyer continues to insist that she crossed the road on a green light.

The driver and his wife appeal to all concerned who may have witnessed their or similar accidents, when a deaf-mute woman ended up on the road and was hit (touched) by a car:

“A witness video published by “Korabeliv.Info” really helped us, showing that there was no lighting at that time, only the traffic lights were working. We are elderly people, I have not been involved in an accident in sixty years, I have good experience and I do not violate traffic rules at traffic lights, nor without them. This woman trained every evening in the gym, and the road is very familiar to her; every time late at night she crossed at this, or possibly another, intersection.

Please, people, respond! I was told that there was such a case involving a deaf-mute person, when the driver did not want police involvement and paid himself for damage to his car mirror, and to her – for moral damage. Perhaps this was not an isolated case. There is a suspicion that she could have been earning money this way. We ask witnesses to come forward, our phone number is +38 050 675 66 84.
