They lack food, medicine, and fuel for heating, and attempts to leave the peninsula drag on for months. Russian occupation of the area has continued since <strong>February 2022<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A displaced man named <strong>Serhii<\/strong>, whose family managed to escape the occupation, told journalists from <a href=\"https:\/\/suspilne.media\/amp\/mykolaiv\/1440437-ne-zalisilosa-navit-sirnikiv-ak-zivut-ludi-na-okupovanij-kinburnskij-kosi-ta-ci-mozliva-evakuacia\/\"><strong>Suspilne<\/strong> <\/a>about the situation. To protect the interviewee, his name has been changed and his face concealed.<\/p>\n<p>The man says the spit\u2019s isolation makes the situation especially dangerous. He compares it to <strong>Oleshky<\/strong>, but notes that Oleshky are on the mainland, while the spit is cut off. Between the <strong>Dnipro<\/strong> and the bay near <strong>Rybalske<\/strong>, he explains, there are only <strong>4 kilometers<\/strong>. The last delivery of food he recalls took place in the spring of last year.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote-light\"><p>\u201cPeople will eat up the food they have now, and that will be it. If nothing changes, I don\u2019t know what will happen there,\u201d says <strong>Serhii<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In his account, the displaced man gives the following information about people still living in the settlements on the spit:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In <strong>Pokrovske<\/strong>, there are <strong>a little over ten<\/strong> residents. He believes food and other necessities have probably not been delivered to the village for a long time.<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>Vasylivka<\/strong>, there are <strong>42 people<\/strong>. They have been preparing to leave for the <strong>third month<\/strong>; their belongings are packed, but, the man says, they are not being allowed to leave.<\/li>\n<li>Speaking about <strong>Pokrovka<\/strong>, he puts the number of residents at <strong>12 or 13<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Civilians also remain in <strong>Heroiske<\/strong>, but the interviewee does not know how many.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Serhii<\/strong> says people are living on the verge of starvation. According to him, Russian troops shot and ate the livestock that could have provided them with food long ago. Even the most basic household items are in short supply.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote-light\"><p>\u201cThere\u2019s no firewood. People are already dismantling things, dragging out whatever they can from ruined houses, some kind of firewood. People are even running out of ordinary matches; there are simply no matches left,\u201d says <strong>Serhii<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The man recalls that about <strong>eight months to a year<\/strong> ago, there were still ways to leave. Now, travel is made more difficult by mined roads. He knows of one family that tried to leave the occupied area: <strong>one<\/strong> of their cars hit a mine, but no one was hurt.<\/p>\n<p>The displaced man calls the residents, cut off from supplies and unable to move freely, hostages. He also describes how mines deprive people even of the opportunity to find food.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote-light\"><p>\u201cIn <strong>Heroiske<\/strong>, they laid nets there, where people used to catch fish for food. <strong>Two people<\/strong> hit mines. That\u2019s it, no one lays nets anymore, there\u2019ll be no more fish, no more food. There\u2019s no flour, no fats, there\u2019s nothing like that. How are people supposed to live?\u201d says <strong>Serhii<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The displaced man says the Russian military presence has also changed. Previously, by his rough estimate, there were <strong>200 or more troops<\/strong> in each village. Now they appear less often and act more cautiously. The man has not seen heavy equipment lately; instead, he has noticed a shift to lighter vehicles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At first, <strong>Ural<\/strong> and <strong>KamAZ<\/strong> trucks were arriving constantly.<\/li>\n<li>Later, \u201cloaves\u201d and \u201ctablets\u201d were used more often. \u201cLoaves\u201d is the nickname for the <strong>UAZ SGR<\/strong>, or <strong>UAZ-452<\/strong> \u2014 old Soviet four-wheel-drive minibuses or vans.<\/li>\n<li>According to him, the armored <strong>Tigers<\/strong> and <strong>Bars<\/strong> disappeared; there were also gradually fewer \u201ctablets\u201d and command vehicles.<\/li>\n<li>Then quad bikes and buggies began to appear \u2014 lightweight off-road vehicles with exposed wheels and a light tubular frame instead of a conventional solid body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the same time, according to <strong>Serhii<\/strong>, pressure on civilians continues. He describes threats to take someone prisoner over a look that displeased the soldiers. The man says drunk Russian soldiers often harass residents. After an altercation like that, they may return the next day and turn the house upside down.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote-light\"><p>\u201c<strong>Two women<\/strong> were killed. <strong>One<\/strong> was shot, <strong>another<\/strong> had her neck broken. People were taken away. <strong>An old man<\/strong> was taken and never seen again; it\u2019s now the <strong>fifth year<\/strong> he\u2019s been \u2018missing.\u2019 They took a young man, a healthy, decent guy \u2014 he became disabled and now receives disability benefits. They beat people and tortured them,\u201d says <strong>Serhii<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The man also describes degrading searches: people were made to undress, and their backpacks, fingers, and tattoos were checked. According to him, locals were forced to obtain Russian passports, and young men fit for military service were handed a draft notice along with their passport.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption aligncenter korabelov-source-photo\">\n<blockquote class=\"quote-light\">\n<p class=\"korabelov-inline-photo\">\u201cWhen they held the referendum, they told everyone to gather at the club, saying there would be some kind of meeting. People gathered, and they surrounded the club \u2014 about <strong>15\u201320<\/strong> armed men. And that was the referendum,\u201d recalls <strong>Serhii<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The spit\u2019s military significance is linked to its location near the outlet to the <strong>Black Sea<\/strong> and the seaports of <strong>Mykolaiv<\/strong> and <strong>Kherson<\/strong> oblasts. <strong>Ukrainian Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk<\/strong> explains that Ukrainian forces have continuously inflicted losses on Russian troops in the area since <strong>2022<\/strong>, but an operation to liberate it requires reliable logistical support.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote-light\"><p>\u201cIt would be quite risky to provide support for a liberation operation without reliable logistics, evacuation, and resupply, especially given that the landing itself would be difficult,\u201d explains <strong>Ukrainian Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"quote-light\"><p>\u201cSo for now, I wouldn\u2019t talk about the possibility of de-occupation while the left bank (ed. \u2014 <strong>Kherson Oblast<\/strong>) remains occupied, while we are unable to establish a foothold there. It is too early to talk about liberating <strong>Kinburn<\/strong>. Every life matters to us, every person, especially a citizen of <strong>Ukraine<\/strong>. The Russians used houses there as hiding places; there aren\u2019t that many of them, especially now \u2014 fewer remain. As they have always done, they are effectively using the local population as a shield,\u201d adds <strong>Dmytro Pletenchuk<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The occupation and fighting are also destroying the peninsula\u2019s natural areas. The head of the research department at the <strong>Biloberezhia Sviatoslava National Nature Park<\/strong> describes the destruction as extensive, with long-lasting consequences.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote-light\"><p>\u201cMost of the pine forests burned down in the first <strong>two years<\/strong> of the full-scale invasion. At present, the entire area appears on maps as a burned landscape of herbaceous vegetation,\u201d says <strong>Svitlana Melnychuk, head of the research department at Biloberezhia Sviatoslava National Nature Park<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Without access to the occupied peninsula, specialists cannot directly calculate the full extent of the environmental damage. They monitor the condition of the area, among other things, by tracking the extent of the burned forests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oleksandr Yarmoshevych<\/strong>, deputy head of the specialized environmental prosecutor\u2019s office at the <strong>Mykolaiv Regional Prosecutor\u2019s Office<\/strong>, cited the established damage figures for <strong>three<\/strong> protected natural areas located on the spit:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption aligncenter korabelov-source-photo\">\n<p class=\"korabelov-inline-photo\"><a href=\"https:\/\/korabelov.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/news-ab94cb2d454910c3d82d6d92-3e898b8b1a95ba1e.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-633876\" src=\"https:\/\/korabelov.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/news-ab94cb2d454910c3d82d6d92-3e898b8b1a95ba1e.jpg\" alt=\"Occupied Kinburn Spit in Mykolaiv Oblast, where civilians remain\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/korabelov.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/news-ab94cb2d454910c3d82d6d92-3e898b8b1a95ba1e.jpg 400w, https:\/\/korabelov.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/news-ab94cb2d454910c3d82d6d92-3e898b8b1a95ba1e-390x220.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Biloberezhia Sviatoslava National Nature Park<\/strong> \u2014 fires affected <strong>6,800 hectares<\/strong>. Damage from forest fires and air pollution amounts to <strong>nearly 28 billion hryvnias<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kinburn Spit Regional Landscape Park<\/strong> \u2014 the official cited an area of <strong>up to 600 hectares<\/strong>, clarifying that he believed the figure was <strong>578 hectares<\/strong>. The established damage amounts to <strong>1 billion 276 million hryvnias<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Black Sea Biosphere Reserve<\/strong> \u2014 <strong>121 hectares<\/strong> were affected, with damage totaling <strong>nearly 283 million hryvnias<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to <strong>Oleksandr Yarmoshevych<\/strong>, the calculation of damage from air pollution has been confirmed by an environmental engineering assessment. It was carried out as part of the pre-trial investigation into proceedings under <strong>Part One of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine<\/strong> \u2014 violations of the laws and customs of war. The investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>For residents, the destruction of nature goes hand in hand with losing the ability to use the surrounding area. The displaced man believes the effects of the fires and mines will be felt for a long time.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote-light\"><p>\u201cThey started planting the forest in <strong>1961<\/strong>; it\u2019ll be like it was before <strong>1961<\/strong>. No one will be able to live there for decades. There\u2019s nowhere to live there. You can\u2019t go into the forest, you can\u2019t wade into the sea or the estuary \u2014 everything is mined,\u201d says <strong>Serhii<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to his account, Russian troops throw <strong>\u201cpetal\u201d mines<\/strong> \u2014 Soviet pressure-activated anti-personnel mines \u2014 from boxes into the reeds. Speaking about <strong>Kovalivka<\/strong> and the coastline, the man describes mines laid in <strong>three to four rows<\/strong>. He says each new rotation adds more mines, extending the mined area inland from the sea. In his estimate, areas as far as <strong>200\u2013250 meters<\/strong> from the sea have now also been mined.<\/p>\n<p>People remain on the spit for various reasons. As <strong>Serhii<\/strong> explains, some have nowhere to go; others cannot even afford the journey. Some do not want to abandon their homes and outbuildings, which they built with their own hands, and are prepared to stay until the very end.<\/p>\n<p>The man calls the arrival of the Russian army the greatest crime, and describes the spit as burned and polluted. He stresses that the Russians were neither expected nor welcomed there: Ukrainians remain on the peninsula, with relatives living outside the occupied territory. In his view, this occupied corner of <strong>Mykolaiv Oblast<\/strong> lacks public attention and efforts to help its people.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote-light\"><p>\u201cIn <strong>Oleshky<\/strong>, the whole community rushed in there, so to speak. There are a lot of people, a lot of children. There may be few people on the spit, but they are people too.
