On this day, construction began on what would become an alumina giant; residents welcomed the defenders of Donetsk Airport, fought to save Mayak Forest, and successfully challenged the city\u2019s controversial zoning plan in court. In later years, the date brought warnings of a water pipeline collapse, reports of unsafe water near the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant, Russian strikes, widespread power outages, and new evidence of war crimes.<\/p>\n

November 6, 1974<\/strong>: construction of the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant began<\/h2>\n

The construction site of the future Mykolaiv Alumina Plant was levelled. The plant\u2019s former chief engineer for capital construction, Anatolii Andreichenko<\/strong>, called<\/a> this the beginning of the plant\u2019s history. Interestingly, a nuclear power plant had previously been considered for the site, and plans called for demolishing Halytsynove<\/strong> and part of Lymany<\/strong> to make way for it. It has been 52 years<\/strong> since construction of the plant began.<\/p>\n

November 6, 2014<\/strong>: Mykolaiv welcomed the defenders of Donetsk Airport<\/h2>\n

Late in the evening, paratroopers from the 79th Separate Airmobile Brigade<\/strong>, who had defended Donetsk Airport, returned to Mykolaiv<\/strong> after a rotation. At about 23:20<\/strong>, the servicemen arrived at their base in 3 buses<\/strong>. Around 120 people<\/strong> greeted them with applause, embraces, and cries of \u201cHeroes!\u201d Residents formed<\/a> a guard of honour for the defenders and sang \u201cWarriors of Light.\u201d<\/p>\n

November 6, 2014<\/strong>: activists pushed to see the prosecutor over Mayak Forest<\/h2>\n

Community activists went to the prosecutor\u2019s office in Korabelnyi District<\/strong>, demanding that disputed plots of land in Mayak Forest be returned to the state and that construction be halted. According to the participants, they managed to meet prosecutor Ihor Domushchyi<\/strong> only after making repeated demands. The activists submitted<\/a> written appeals and accused law enforcement of dragging out the case.<\/p>\n

November 6, 2017<\/strong>: court overturned Mykolaiv\u2019s controversial zoning plan<\/h2>\n

The Mykolaiv District Administrative Court ruled unlawful<\/a> the city council\u2019s decision to approve the city\u2019s zoning plan. Adopted on August 11, 2016<\/strong>, the document sparked protests over the threat of development in green spaces, parks, waterfront areas, and Mayak Forest. The zoning plan\u2019s cancellation was later upheld on appeal.<\/p>\n

November 6, 2020<\/strong>: a teenager died of COVID-19 in Mykolaiv<\/h2>\n

A 17-year-old boy<\/strong> died of coronavirus in Mykolaiv<\/strong>. The city\u2019s mayor, Oleksandr Sienkevych<\/strong>, announced<\/a> the tragedy, noting that it was the city\u2019s first child death from COVID-19. The boy died on his birthday. The previous day, the region had confirmed 224 new cases<\/strong> and 6 deaths<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

November 6, 2021<\/strong>: horrific crash killed a father and two children<\/h2>\n

At about 01:48<\/strong>, a Chevrolet Lacetti and a VAZ-2101 carrying a family collided on the M-14<\/strong> highway near the village of Shevchenkove<\/strong>. The crash killed<\/a> 3 people<\/strong>\u2014the driver and two children aged 3 and 5<\/strong>. Another 4 family members<\/strong> were hospitalized.<\/p>\n

November 6, 2022<\/strong>: two Iranian drones struck an industrial facility<\/h2>\n

At about 02:05<\/strong>, Russian forces struck industrial infrastructure in the Halytsynove community<\/strong>. According to information<\/a> from the Operational Command \u201cSouth,\u201d 2 Iranian kamikaze drones<\/strong> hit an industrial facility, while Ukrainian air defense shot down 1 more drone<\/strong>. Production facilities were damaged. There were no casualties.<\/p>\n

November 6, 2023<\/strong>: laboratory confirmed unsafe water near the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant<\/h2>\n

A State Production and Consumer Service laboratory report dated November 6<\/strong> confirmed<\/a> that the tap water tested in the villages of Halytsynove<\/strong>, Lymany<\/strong>, and Lupareve<\/strong> did not meet sanitary standards. Arsenic and bacterial contamination were found in the samples. The regulator recommended an immediate ban on using the water for drinking and cooking. Local activists suspected that the plant\u2019s residue fields were responsible, but these tests did not establish the cause of the contamination.<\/p>\n

November 6, 2023<\/strong>: ex-lawmaker sentenced to 15 years for planning a \u201cMykolaiv People\u2019s Republic\u201d<\/h2>\n

The Security Service of Ukraine announced<\/a> the sentence handed to former Mykolaiv city council member Serhii Shubin<\/strong>: 15 years in prison<\/strong>. November 6, 2023<\/strong>: family of slain police officer received his award<\/h2>\n

In Mykolaiv<\/strong>, the brother of fallen special forces officer Yurii Khyzhynskyi<\/strong> received<\/a> the \u201cDefender of the Fatherland\u201d medal, awarded to the officer posthumously. The 29-year-old<\/strong> lieutenant was killed on January 19, 2023<\/strong>, when Russian forces shelled a vehicle carrying Mykolaiv police officers in the Beryslav district of the Kherson region.<\/p>\n

November 6, 2024<\/strong>: Russian attack left tens of thousands without power<\/h2>\n

During the night of November 6<\/strong>, Russian forces attacked<\/a> energy infrastructure in the Mykolaiv region<\/strong>. Ukrainian air defense destroyed 7 Shahed drones<\/strong>, but damage could not be avoided. Initially, more than 40,000 consumers<\/strong> were left without electricity. As of 08:00<\/strong>, 25,500 residential<\/strong> and 1,500 commercial consumers<\/strong> in the Pervomaisk district were still without power. The outage affected<\/a> 21 settlements<\/strong> and part of Pervomaisk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

November 6, 2025<\/strong>: the world learned of the disaster on the Kinburn Spit<\/h2>\n

Ukrainian Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk<\/strong> described<\/a> the disastrous condition of the Kinburn Spit, which was under Russian occupation. According to him, the fighting had caused widespread destruction of forests and unique natural ecosystems. It remained unclear whether the protected area could be fully restored.<\/p>\n
