But amid the reports about international assistance and the expansion of the city\u2019s electric transit fleet, there is an interesting detail: <strong>Mykolaiv is receiving genuine pensioner trams built as far back as 1969\u20131972<\/strong>. That means that in <strong>2026<\/strong>, these cars are already <strong>54\u201357 years old<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>These are <strong>H\u00e4gglund M29<\/strong> trams, which carried passengers in <strong>Gothenburg<\/strong> for more than <strong>half a century<\/strong>. Sweden is gradually replacing this rolling stock with modern cars, and the old trams were due to be decommissioned and scrapped. Now they will have a chance at a second life in <strong>Mykolaiv<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The car\u2019s arrival and age were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ol.vasilyev\/posts\/pfbid0xkbQvKXttVwwHRHx1wWvkvkTns5cpGXNx5LaqfKcaKoouYyWQGGq4ky6DnZ8SF4kl\">reported on Facebook by Oleh Vasyliev<\/a>. The arrival was also <a href=\"https:\/\/mkrada.gov.ua\/news\/26351.html\">confirmed by the Mykolaiv City Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Prepared for scrapping in Sweden, donated to Mykolaiv<\/h2>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svt.se\/nyheter\/lokalt\/vast\/goteborg-donerar-40-sparvagnar-till-ukraina\">Swedish broadcaster SVT reported<\/a>, the <strong>40 M29 trams<\/strong> intended for transfer to Ukraine had previously been slated for withdrawal from service. Without an agreement with <strong>Mykolaiv<\/strong>, they would have been scrapped.<\/p>\n<p>The G\u00f6teborgs Sp\u00e5rv\u00e4gar company website listed <strong>June 1, 2026<\/strong> as the end-of-service date for all cars of this series that were still in operation.<\/p>\n<p>The reason for retiring the old vehicles is the Swedish city\u2019s tram fleet renewal. Modern low-floor <strong>M34<\/strong> cars are replacing the M29s and are being introduced into service during <strong>2025\u20132027<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, transferring the old vehicles to Ukraine allows the Swedish side to avoid some of the costs of scrapping them.<\/p>\n<h2>Half a century in service: what is known about the M29 trams<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>H\u00e4gglund M29<\/strong> cars were built in the Swedish city of <strong>\u00d6rnsk\u00f6ldsvik<\/strong> from <strong>1969 to 1972<\/strong>. A total of <strong>60 of these trams<\/strong> were manufactured.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Swedish tramway society, the model has the following specifications:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Car length \u2014 <strong>15.13 meters<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Width \u2014 <strong>2.65 meters<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Weight \u2014 about <strong>17 tonnes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Maximum speed \u2014 <strong>60 km\/h<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Passenger capacity \u2014 <strong>118 people<\/strong>, including <strong>36 seats<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are old high-floor cars that lack the accessibility features found in modern low-floor trams.<\/p>\n<p>Over decades of service, these cars became one of the recognizable symbols of public transit in <strong>Gothenburg<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite their age, Swedish transit workers kept them in working order. In particular, in <strong>2022<\/strong>, G\u00f6teborgs Sp\u00e5rv\u00e4gar decided to repair <strong>20 M29 trams<\/strong> so they could operate safely until the series was retired.<\/p>\n<p>The repairs included removing corrosion from the bodies, restoring metal structures, repairing electrical and pneumatic systems, replacing individual components, and repainting. The work was <a href=\"https:\/\/goteborgssparvagar.se\/alla-m29-hemma\/\">reported by Gothenburg\u2019s transit company itself<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to information provided by <strong>Oleh Vasyliev<\/strong>, the cars underwent regular factory repairs and major overhauls. Until recently, they were in regular service and are in good technical condition.<\/p>\n<p>However, the repairs do not change the fact that the trams\u2019 main structures were built more than <strong>half a century ago<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>The old trams will also need to be converted<\/h2>\n<p>The first Swedish car was delivered to the depot of the Mykolaivelektrotrans municipal enterprise on <strong>November 2, 2026<\/strong>. But it will not be able to start serving city routes straight away.<\/p>\n<p>The main technical challenge is the difference in track gauge:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In <strong>Gothenburg<\/strong> \u2014 <strong>1,435 mm<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>Mykolaiv<\/strong> \u2014 <strong>1,524 mm<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To adapt the Swedish cars to Mykolaiv\u2019s infrastructure, the company\u2019s specialists will need to replace the wheelsets, modify the bogies, and conduct technical trials.<\/p>\n<p>After conversion, the tram must undergo mandatory technical inspections and testing on Mykolaiv\u2019s tracks. Only then can it be approved for passenger service.<\/p>\n<p>Employees of Mykolaivelektrotrans have already visited <strong>Sweden<\/strong>, where they studied the cars\u2019 design, maintenance requirements, and conversion options.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s director, <strong>Yurii Smetana<\/strong>, previously noted that, despite their age, the Swedish cars are in significantly better technical condition than most of the trams currently operating in <strong>Mykolaiv<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, the specific cost of converting the entire batch of <strong>40 cars<\/strong> and the timeline for completing the work have not yet been announced.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/korabelov.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/886609159_1633400924910443_8965108160184187440_n-e1793870761522.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-633500\" src=\"https:\/\/korabelov.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/886609159_1633400924910443_8965108160184187440_n-e1793870761522.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"894\" height=\"596\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Another 39 pensioner trams are awaiting transfer<\/h2>\n<p>The agreement provides for the transfer of <strong>40 Swedish trams<\/strong>. The first car has already arrived in <strong>Mykolaiv<\/strong>, while another <strong>39<\/strong> are still included in the supply program.<\/p>\n<p>The city expects to receive the next <strong>10 cars<\/strong> in <strong>2027<\/strong>, with the remaining vehicles to be transferred in stages during <strong>2027\u20132028<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>According to preliminary agreements, the trams themselves are being transferred <strong>free of charge<\/strong>, while the Swedish side is covering transportation costs.<\/p>\n<p>Cooperation between the cities was coordinated by <strong>Ragnar Lund<\/strong>, director of the Rethinking Cities in Ukraine platform.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the arrival of the first car, Mayor <strong>Oleksandr Sienkevych<\/strong> explained that its adaptation and entry into service must come before any further trams are transferred.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote-light\"><p>&#8220;This is the first tram we have received from the city of Gothenburg. Next, we need to adapt it, and once it enters service, we will receive the others. I thank our partners and the employees of Mykolaivelektrotrans who went to Sweden, saw how the trams could be converted, and received positive feedback about further cooperation. I hope this tram will be running on Mykolaiv\u2019s tracks soon.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Thus, <strong>Mykolaiv<\/strong> has an opportunity to expand its tram fleet without spending money on purchasing cars.
