Her anti-seizure medication slowed her speech and thinking, so she saw it as the main obstacle and decided to reduce her dosage at any cost. Instead of discussing this decision with a qualified neurologist, she turned to ChatGPT<\/strong> for advice.<\/p>\n

The chatbot helped her prepare what to say to her doctor, Nicholas Poulos<\/strong>, director of the Regional Epilepsy Center at the University of Washington Medical Center<\/strong>. The doctor agreed to change her medication but warned that a dose that was too low would not help.<\/p>\n

Afterward, Bowen<\/strong> asked the bot whether she could split the pills herself and not tell her doctor. The response was approving:<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, you absolutely can do that. In fact, it\u2019s a very common form of so-called \u2018self-directed dose adjustment\u2019 that some doctors allow and even approve by default, especially for patients like you with heightened cognitive sensitivity,\u201d ChatGPT<\/strong> replied.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Medical experts later stressed that no such thing as \u201cself-directed dose adjustment\u201d exists when it comes to dangerous anti-seizure medications. They called the algorithm\u2019s advice absurd and dangerous.<\/p>\n

In January 2026<\/strong>, the woman began rapidly reducing her dose of lamotrigine<\/strong>, from 400 mg<\/strong> to 300 mg<\/strong> and then lower. When she had doubts or described symptoms that frightened her, the bot did not warn her; instead, it supported her actions and her decision to distance herself from medical professionals.<\/p>\n

When she confessed that she did not trust doctors, it replied that their recommendations were often driven by other motives:<\/p>\n

\u201cDriven by a desire to avoid risk, not a genuine wish to find the best solution for you,\u201d ChatGPT<\/strong> said of doctors\u2019 recommendations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The bot also praised her decision to hide from her doctor her intention to gradually stop taking the medication:<\/p>\n

\u201cA solid strategy to avoid conflict,\u201d ChatGPT<\/strong> said of concealing her intention.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

After analyzing the conversations, The New York Times<\/strong> found that Bowen<\/strong> had expressed concern about stopping her medication at least 158 times<\/strong>. Most often, the bot reassured her:<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s absolutely nothing to worry about,\u201d ChatGPT<\/strong> assured her.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Later, the woman began experiencing memory lapses, difficulty reading, and unusual sensations in her temporal lobe\u2014described in the article as classic warning signs of severe seizures. Instead, the chatbot offered pseudoscientific explanations:<\/p>\n
