In the first <strong>nine months<\/strong> of the year, farmers lost <strong>60%<\/strong> of their financial reserves amid difficulties selling produce abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Export restrictions, a lack of crop storage capacity and the effects of the war continue to put pressure on the agricultural sector. Disruptions to Black Sea port operations mean that <strong>Ukraine<\/strong> can export only about <strong>half<\/strong> of its potential agricultural output. In September, <strong>2.4 million tonnes<\/strong> were shipped abroad \u2014 just <strong>46%<\/strong> of the expected figure.<\/p>\n<p>Farms in southern <strong>Ukraine<\/strong> are particularly hard hit by logistical difficulties. Farmers in <strong>Odesa region<\/strong> harvested a substantial crop despite working amid shelling, field fires and difficult weather. However, the effective shutdown of the ports of <strong>Greater Odesa<\/strong> has made it harder to find buyers and storage for grain. Purchase prices are also falling.<\/p>\n<p>Since export restrictions were introduced in mid-July, farms\u2019 available cash reserves have fallen substantially. The figures show the following change:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At the start of the year, farmers had approximately <strong>$5 billion<\/strong>. This estimate is based on about <strong>$250<\/strong> per hectare across <strong>20 million hectares<\/strong> planted with grains and oilseeds.<\/li>\n<li>As of <strong>October 1<\/strong>, <strong>$2 billion<\/strong> remained, or an average of <strong>$100<\/strong> per hectare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"quote-light\"><p>\u201cIn effect, we are saying that crop production is expected to generate zero profitability by the end of <strong>2026<\/strong>,\u201d Agriculture and Food Minister <strong>Taras Vysotskyi<\/strong> told reporters.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The ability to carry out the next sowing campaign will depend on the financial condition of farms. Increased agricultural exports would give farmers more money for fertilisers and crop protection products, as well as the opportunity to use land available for sowing.<\/p>\n<p>If export restrictions remain in place, production costs will have to be cut. This could weaken businesses\u2019 financial resilience and limit their ability to carry out spring fieldwork.<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture in <strong>Mykolaiv region<\/strong> is also affected by the war and limited access to water. In <strong>2025<\/strong>, <strong>20,600 hectares<\/strong> in the region were irrigated \u2014 approximately <strong>one-third<\/strong> less than before <strong>Russia\u2019s<\/strong> full-scale invasion.<\/p>\n<p>The sugar industry is also forecast to decline due to the worsening quality of sugar beet.
