At the same time, relations between <strong>Washington<\/strong> and <strong>Kyiv<\/strong> remain strained, and possible components of a peace deal under discussion include both security issues and the parties\u2019 economic interests.<\/p>\n<p>The following possible terms are being considered for <strong>Ukraine<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the prospect of joining the <strong>EU<\/strong> in exchange for giving up <strong>NATO<\/strong> membership;<\/li>\n<li>the creation of a demilitarized zone in the <strong>Donbas<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>investment in Ukraine\u2019s economy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A potential deal could also include economic concessions to <strong>Russia<\/strong>. Options under discussion include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>agreements between Russian and American companies;<\/li>\n<li>easing sanctions;<\/li>\n<li>normalizing political relations with <strong>Moscow<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>resuming Russian gas supplies to <strong>Europe<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>bringing the <strong>Nord Stream<\/strong> pipeline back into operation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A Ukrainian official who spoke with journalists expressed concern that the economic interests of some participants in the negotiations could outweigh the pursuit of lasting peace. According to the official, the Ukrainian side fears that representatives of <strong>U.S. President Donald Trump<\/strong> will try to agree on lucrative business projects with <strong>Russia<\/strong> before acceptable terms for ending the war and security guarantees have been agreed upon with <strong>Kyiv<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote-light\"><p>\u201cFrom their point of view, why wait and waste time? Time is money,\u201d the Ukrainian official said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A U.S. government source, however, believes that <strong>Trump\u2019s<\/strong> recent moves are not intended to force <strong>Ukraine<\/strong> to capitulate. In the source\u2019s view, the <strong>U.S.<\/strong> president may have fallen victim to a successful Russian information operation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>U.S. special envoys Steve Witkoff<\/strong> and <strong>Jared Kushner<\/strong> may be misjudging Russian President <strong>Vladimir Putin\u2019s<\/strong> motives by focusing primarily on his economic and territorial interests rather than his nationalist aims. This approach could leave American negotiators vulnerable to manipulation by <strong>Moscow<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A separate issue is the restriction of <strong>Starlink<\/strong> satellite service for <strong>Ukraine<\/strong>. This may have been intended as a diplomatic signal to <strong>Kyiv<\/strong>, but the practical consequences affected the situation on the battlefield. Developments have benefited <strong>Moscow<\/strong>, alongside other decisions by <strong>Washington<\/strong>: reaching an agreement with <strong>Russia<\/strong> on diesel fuel supplies and postponing new sanctions tied to Senator <strong>Lindsey Graham\u2019s<\/strong> bill.<\/p>\n<p>Domestic political changes in the <strong>U.S.<\/strong> will not necessarily make things easier for <strong>Ukraine<\/strong>. <strong>One<\/strong> U.S. congressman believes that even if Republicans lose control of <strong>Congress<\/strong> in the midterm elections, that would not guarantee any easing of <strong>Trump\u2019s<\/strong> pressure on <strong>Kyiv<\/strong>.
