To advance this initiative, the <strong>Ministry of Defence of Ukraine<\/strong> signed a letter of intent with Finnish companies <strong>ICEYE<\/strong> and <strong>Nokia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The signing took place yesterday, <strong>October 22<\/strong>, during a visit to <strong>Ukraine<\/strong> by Finnish Prime Minister <strong>Petteri Orpo<\/strong>. The cooperation is at an early stage: the parties will assess the feasibility of the project and continue developing it. The letter of intent itself does not mean that the system is being launched. No specific timelines or funding amounts have been announced.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in <strong>October<\/strong>, <strong>ICEYE<\/strong> and <strong>Nokia<\/strong> announced a joint effort to develop secure broadband satellite communications in low Earth orbit. In such systems, data is transmitted via satellites orbiting relatively close to <strong>Earth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A key feature of the proposed model is state ownership and control of the entire system. <strong>Ukraine<\/strong> will be able to manage its components independently:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>satellites;<\/li>\n<li>ground infrastructure;<\/li>\n<li>user terminals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This approach is intended to eliminate dependence on external operators for critically important communications. The infrastructure is proposed for use in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>defence;<\/li>\n<li>state border security;<\/li>\n<li>emergency services;<\/li>\n<li>disaster response.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"quote-light\"><p>\u201cUkraine needs secure, sovereign and high-performance satellite communications systems that it controls,\u201d said <strong>ICEYE<\/strong> CEO and co-founder <strong>Rafal Modrzewski<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He also noted that <strong>ICEYE<\/strong> has been supporting <strong>Ukraine<\/strong> since <strong>2022<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nokia Defense<\/strong> Director <strong>Mikko Hautala<\/strong> highlighted the ability of satellite networks to maintain communications even after ground infrastructure is damaged. He said the new system should give <strong>Ukraine<\/strong> the ability to independently control critically important communications.
