October 22<\/strong> in the history of Mykolaiv<\/strong> and the Korabelnyi District<\/strong> \u2014 a day of warships being launched, 25 million cartridges<\/strong> going missing from the port of Oktyabrsk, remembrance of a fallen defender, Vytovka\u2019s age-old traditions, and Russian attacks. On this day, a major MSEC corruption case was also exposed, while world history saw the first parachute jump from a hot-air balloon and one of the most dangerous moments of the Cold War.<\/p>\n

October 22, 1831<\/strong>: a 60-gun frigate was launched in Mykolaiv<\/h2>\n

The frigate \u201cEnos,\u201d armed with 60 guns<\/strong>, was launched at Perovsky\u2019s private shipyard in Mykolaiv<\/strong>. The ship was one of a series of 6 frigates<\/strong> built by Mykolaiv shipbuilders. The historical source gives the date as October 10, 1831<\/strong>, Old Style, corresponding to October 22<\/strong> on the modern calendar.<\/p>\n

October 22, 1939<\/strong>: a Mykolaiv-built destroyer joined the fleet<\/h2>\n

The destroyer \u201cBditelnyi,\u201d built at the 61 Communards<\/strong> Shipyard, joined the Black Sea Fleet. During World War II, the ship evacuated service members and the wounded, helped defend Sevastopol, and escorted transport vessels. On July 2, 1942<\/strong>, it was sunk by German aircraft in Novorossiysk Bay.<\/p>\n

October 22, 2014<\/strong>: the mother of a fallen defender from Korabelnyi received his order<\/h2>\n

At the administration of the Korabelnyi District<\/strong>, the Order \u201cFor Courage,\u201d 3rd Class, was presented<\/a> to Nadiia Andriivna Kostiushko<\/strong>. It had been awarded posthumously to her son, Sergeant Oleksandr Mykolaiovych Kostiushko<\/strong>. The soldier was killed on July 13, 2014<\/strong>, during a mortar attack near Porichchia in the Luhansk region. The defender was commemorated with a moment of silence.<\/p>\n

October 22, 2014<\/strong>: 25 million cartridges were found missing at the port of Oktyabrsk<\/h2>\n

The Prosecutor General\u2019s Office of Ukraine released<\/a> the findings of an inspection into ammunition storage at the specialized seaport of Oktyabrsk in the Korabelnyi District<\/strong>. Of 50 million cartridges<\/strong> of 7.62 mm caliber, only half were found during the inventory. The whereabouts of the remaining 25 million<\/strong> were unknown, and the potential losses to the state were estimated at approximately 16 million hryvnias<\/strong>. Criminal proceedings had been opened the previous day, October 21<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

October 22, 2019<\/strong>: an age-old fishermen\u2019s dish was revived in Vytovka<\/h2>\n

In the courtyard of the museum at the Siversov Lighthouse in the Korabelnyi District<\/strong>, the method of preparing \u201cTyulka nastorchak\u201d was recreated<\/a>. This traditional dish of fishermen from Vytovka-Bohoyavlensk has been known since at least the 19th century<\/strong>. It was prepared by Viktor Kasianovskyi, a fifth-generation fisherman<\/strong>, while local historian Ihor Pisnyi<\/strong> spoke about local traditions. The cooking process was recorded on video.<\/p>\n

October 22, 2020<\/strong>: Mykolaiv shipbuilders returned the Berdiansk patrol boat to service<\/h2>\n

After a major overhaul at the Mykolaiv Shipbuilding Plant, the small armored artillery boat R175<\/strong> \u201cBerdiansk\u201d returned<\/a> to service. It was one of the Ukrainian boats captured by Russia during an attack near the Kerch Strait in 2018<\/strong> and later returned to Ukraine. Mykolaiv specialists repaired its damaged equipment and hull.<\/p>\n

October 22, 2022<\/strong>: a Russian attack killed a resident of Lymany<\/h2>\n

After 3 a.m.<\/strong>, Russian forces shelled the village of Lymany in the Halytsynove community, near the Korabelnyi District<\/strong>. The strikes set a residential building on fire, where rescuers found<\/a> the body of a man born in 1957<\/strong>. According to the Regional Military Administration, another resident was wounded during the shelling of the community, and power lines and a gas pipeline were damaged.<\/p>\n

October 22, 2024<\/strong>: more than $450,000 found in the Mykolaiv MSEC case<\/h2>\n

The Security Service of Ukraine reported<\/a> that the head of the Mykolaiv Regional MSEC Center had been exposed over alleged corruption schemes. During searches, law enforcement officers seized more than $450,000<\/strong> and jewelry, and also found a Russian passport belonging to her son. According to investigators, the official had registered 3 undeclared apartments<\/strong> in his name, and in 2023<\/strong> both of them received Group II disability status<\/strong>. The Security Service of Ukraine itself reported<\/a> the findings of the investigation.<\/p>\n

October 22, 1937<\/strong>: the NKVD arrested the first Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Church<\/h2>\n

In Kyiv<\/strong>, Soviet security forces arrested Vasyl Lypkivskyi<\/strong>, the first Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church and one of the symbols of the struggle for the independence of Ukrainian Orthodoxy. As the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory reports<\/a>, the 73-year-old<\/strong> clergyman was accused of belonging to a fictitious nationalist organization. He was executed on November 27, 1937<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

October 22, 1797<\/strong>: the first parachute jump from a hot-air balloon took place in Paris<\/h2>\n

French inventor Andr\u00e9-Jacques Garnerin<\/strong> made the first documented successful parachute descent from a hot-air balloon. As the Smithsonian Institution reports<\/a>, the inventor detached himself from the balloon above Paris\u2019s Parc Monceau and landed in a basket suspended from a silk parachute. The unusual spectacle drew a crowd and became an important milestone in the history of aeronautics.<\/p>\n

October 22, 1962<\/strong>: the world stood on the brink of nuclear war<\/h2>\n

U.S. President John F. Kennedy<\/strong> addressed<\/a> Americans on television and announced that Soviet nuclear missiles had been discovered in Cuba. He declared a naval blockade, officially called a \u201cquarantine,\u201d and demanded the dismantling of the missile installations.
