In previous years, production stood at around <strong>1.8 million tonnes<\/strong>. This forecast was announced by <strong>Ukrtsukor<\/strong> association head <strong>Yana Kavushevska<\/strong> on the <strong>\u201cMinselo\u201d<\/strong> podcast. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=gI9P_KGgq5Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">youtube.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She considers the upper end of the forecast optimistic. At the same time, no sugar shortage is expected for Ukrainian consumers: the country\u2019s monthly demand is approximately <strong>65,000 tonnes<\/strong>. The projected new-crop output will be enough to meet domestic consumption and build up reserves.<\/p>\n<p>Far less product will be available for export. Due to the deteriorating quality of sugar beets, exports are expected to total <strong>200,000\u2013300,000 tonnes<\/strong>. By comparison, in previous seasons <strong>Ukraine<\/strong> exported:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>around <strong>580,000 tonnes<\/strong> of sugar in the <strong>2024\/2025<\/strong> season;<\/li>\n<li>approximately <strong>646,000 tonnes<\/strong> in the <strong>2025\/2026<\/strong> season.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The amount of sugar sold on foreign markets in the new season will depend on the operation of seaports and trade terms with the <strong>European Union<\/strong>. <strong>Ukrtsukor<\/strong> hopes negotiations with <strong>EU<\/strong> partners will make it possible to review quotas for <strong>Ukraine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The industry\u2019s current difficulties were preceded by a sugar surplus. As <strong>Yana Kavushevska<\/strong> explained, in previous years supply exceeded demand, forcing factories to sell their product below cost. Some facilities also operated beyond the standard <strong>100 days<\/strong>. This increased expenses and made it harder to store raw materials.<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>2025\/2026<\/strong> season, sugar beets covered just <strong>162,000 hectares<\/strong> in <strong>Ukraine<\/strong>\u2014the smallest area since independence. And in <strong>May 2026<\/strong>, the price of sugar fell to <strong>22 hryvnias per kilogram<\/strong>, reaching a <strong>four-year<\/strong> low.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Ukrainian Agribusiness Club<\/strong> had previously published a separate forecast for the <strong>2025\/2026<\/strong> season: production was expected to reach <strong>1.3 million tonnes<\/strong>, down <strong>26%<\/strong> from <strong>2024<\/strong>. The main reasons cited for the decline were export restrictions to the <strong>EU<\/strong> and challenging logistics.<\/p>\n<p>In the calendar year <strong>2025<\/strong>, <strong>Ukraine<\/strong> exported <strong>463,700 tonnes<\/strong> of sugar.
