The government\u2019s plans were reported by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/reuters.com\/legal\/litigation\/norway-targets-harmful-social-media-games-with-under-16-ban-2026-10-19?taid=6ad61b70f1222300014cecaf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The government first promised to submit a bill banning social media for children below a certain age to parliament in <strong>April<\/strong>. The bill is expected to be introduced by the end of the year. The government has now clarified that the restrictions should also cover gaming and communication services that pose a danger to children.<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Children and <strong>Family<\/strong> Affairs <strong>Lene V\u00e5gslid<\/strong> explained the risks behind the initiative. These include platforms where children may encounter:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>content that could harm them;<\/li>\n<li>features that can be addictive;<\/li>\n<li>illegal advertising;<\/li>\n<li>unwanted contact with strangers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Technology companies would be required to remove dangerous content, as well as features that encourage users to spend more time on their platforms. Under the government\u2019s plan, the companies would also be responsible for verifying users\u2019 ages.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, messaging apps and games deemed safe by the government are expected to remain available to children. The final list of platforms that will be subject to the ban has not yet been published.<\/p>\n<p>Children\u2019s protection on social media is also under review in <strong>Turkey<\/strong>. In <strong>February 2026<\/strong>, Turkey\u2019s personal data protection authority began reviewing <strong>six<\/strong> major social networks, including <strong>TikTok<\/strong> and <strong>Instagram<\/strong>.
