October 17<\/strong> has marked many significant events in the history of Mykolaiv<\/strong> and the Korabelnyi District<\/strong>: from the fight to save the Ocean shipyard and preserve municipal land to Russian attacks and the return of Ukrainians from captivity. Here are the most important events, according to the Korabelov.info archives.<\/p>\n

2012. A book about the history of Bohoyavlensk<\/h2>\n

On October 17<\/strong>, a book titled \u201cBohoyavlensk and Its Surroundings: Historical and Local Studies\u201d by Valentyn Kasyanovskyi<\/strong> and Ivan Snytko<\/strong> was presented<\/a> in Mykolaiv<\/strong>. The publication was the result of many years of research into the history of what is now the Korabelnyi District. The book was published in a print run of 5,000 copies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

2012. Power cut off at Ocean; workers stranded on cranes<\/h2>\n

Electricity was cut off<\/a> at the Ocean shipyard over unpaid bills. Workers were left on tower cranes, cargo hung suspended, and pumps stopped. Mayor Volodymyr Chaika<\/strong> demanded that power be restored immediately to prevent an accident.<\/p>\n

2013. Liquidation of Ocean begins<\/h2>\n

2018. Karting track land leased until 2033<\/h2>\n

Activists found out<\/a> that 9.2 hectares<\/strong> of land beneath the karting track in the Korabelnyi District<\/strong> had been leased to NereyIntertrans LLC until 2033<\/strong>. The annual rent was 637,622 hryvnias<\/strong>. Athletes demanded that the land be returned so karting could be revived.<\/p>\n

2019. Ocean returns to shipbuilding<\/h2>\n

After a prolonged decline, the Ocean shipyard announced<\/a> new shipbuilding contracts. The company signed agreements with Dutch firm Eurobulk to build 2 barges<\/strong>, each 79 meters<\/strong> long. The work required 1,200 tonnes<\/strong> of Ukrainian steel.<\/p>\n

2022. Major fire after Russian attack<\/h2>\n

On the night of October 17<\/strong>, a Russian attack caused a fire in sunflower oil storage tanks in Mykolaiv<\/strong>. 63 firefighters<\/strong> from across the city, including the Korabelnyi District, worked to extinguish<\/a> the blaze, which covered an area of 1,000 m\u00b2<\/strong>. 2022. 108 Ukrainian women return from Russian captivity<\/h2>\n

2025. Russia attacks the outskirts of Mykolaiv with guided aerial bombs for the first time<\/h2>\n

On October 17<\/strong>, Regional Military Administration head Vitalii Kim<\/strong> reported<\/a> the first use of Russian guided aerial bombs against the outskirts of Mykolaiv<\/strong>. The previous day, Russian forces had launched 2 munitions<\/strong> from the Black Sea area. Preliminary reports indicated that no one was injured.<\/p>\n

1990. Victory of the Revolution on Granite<\/h3>\n

On October 17, 1990<\/strong>, the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR adopted<\/a> a resolution to consider the demands of students who had been on a hunger strike in Kyiv<\/strong> since October 2<\/strong>. This marked a victory for the Revolution on Granite\u2014the first successful mass nonviolent protest against communist rule in Ukraine. Government head Vitalii Masol<\/strong> later resigned.<\/p>\n

1973. The beginning of the global oil crisis<\/h3>\n

On October 17, 1973<\/strong>, Arab oil-exporting states decided<\/a> to cut oil production by at least 5% per month<\/strong> amid the Arab-Israeli war. This decision became one of the key triggers of the oil crisis, which caused energy prices to soar and brought economic turmoil around the world.<\/p>\n
