On this day, a centennial birthday was celebrated, pro-Russian provocateurs were reported detained, monuments to Ukraine\u2019s defenders were unveiled, well-known residents were mourned, and rescue operations following a Russian attack came to an end.<\/p>\n

October 14, 2013<\/strong>: Korabelnyi resident celebrates her 100th birthday<\/h2>\n

Maria Ivanivna Harbuzenko<\/strong>, a resident of Korabelnyi District, turned<\/a> 100 years old<\/strong>. A former teacher and kindergarten educator, she lived through the war, raised three children<\/strong> on her own, and had more than 30 years<\/strong> of work experience. By the time of her birthday, she had five grandchildren<\/strong> and three great-grandchildren<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

October 14, 2014<\/strong>: SBU reports plot to bomb Kulbakine Airfield<\/h2>\n

The Security Service of Ukraine announced<\/a> that it had completed its investigation into a 41-year-old<\/strong> Mykolaiv resident who, according to investigators, was preparing sabotage at the Kulbakine military airfield on orders from militants of the so-called \u201cDPR.\u201d The man studied the site\u2019s security and flight schedules and made explosives intended to damage combat aircraft. He was detained on June 19, 2014<\/strong>, and the case materials were sent to the prosecutor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

October 14, 2015<\/strong>: two suspects in pro-Russian provocations detained in Korabelnyi<\/h2>\n

In the area of the Shyrokobalsky railway stretch, unidentified individuals painted symbols of the so-called \u201cNovorossiya\u201d on a concrete fence and hung a defaced Ukrainian flag on a high-voltage power-line pole. That same day, as Korabelov.info reported<\/a>, citing its own sources, SBU officers detained two young residents of Korabelnyi District<\/strong> on suspicion of involvement in the provocations. Law enforcement opened criminal proceedings.<\/p>\n

October 14, 2016<\/strong>: Cossack Mamai sculpture and memorial avenue unveiled in Mykolaiv<\/h2>\n

A park sculpture of Cossack Mamai was unveiled<\/a> in Peremohy Park, and an oak tree was planted in the Cossack tradition. That same day, the Alley of Memory for fallen Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) participants was established on the central avenue. Military families and government representatives planted the first 10 trees bearing names<\/strong>, honoring Ukraine\u2019s defenders who never returned from the war.<\/p>\n

October 14, 2017<\/strong>: 300-meter flag and memorial to fallen defenders unveiled<\/h2>\n

During a ceremonial march in the center of Mykolaiv<\/strong>, service members and residents unfurled<\/a> a Ukrainian flag measuring 300 meters<\/strong> in length. The events were attended by military personnel, law enforcement officers, rescuers, and volunteers. That same day, a memorial to fallen ATO participants was officially unveiled outside the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration building, honoring the soldiers who gave their lives for Ukraine.<\/p>\n

October 14, 2020<\/strong>: chief director of Korabelnyi Palace of Culture passes away<\/h2>\n

Sad news shook the district\u2019s cultural community: Maryna Volodymyrivna Broyak<\/strong>, chief director of Mykolaiv\u2019s Korabelnyi Palace of Culture, passed away<\/a>. The loss was announced by the institution\u2019s deputy director, Maksym Korovai<\/strong>. Her death was a painful loss for colleagues, performers, and many district residents.<\/p>\n

October 14, 2022<\/strong>: search for those killed in missile strike comes to an end<\/h2>\n

At 2:30 p.m.<\/strong>, rescuers pulled<\/a> the body of the last missing resident from the rubble of the destroyed five-story building. The building had been hit by a Russian missile on October 13<\/strong>. The final death toll from that attack on Mykolaiv<\/strong> was 8 people<\/strong>: 7 residents of the building<\/strong> and 1 rescuer<\/strong> who was at the boat station. Among the victims was 12-year-old Artem<\/strong>, who died in hospital after being rescued from the rubble.<\/p>\n

October 14, 2022<\/strong>: damage to sports college attended by Olympic champions comes to light<\/h2>\n

The National Fencing Federation of Ukraine reported<\/a> extensive damage to the Mykolaiv Professional College of Physical Education caused by Russian shelling. Classrooms, a dormitory, and the fencing hall were damaged. Olympic champions Olha Kharlan<\/strong> and Olena Khomrova<\/strong> studied at this institution.<\/p>\n

October 14, 2024<\/strong>: Mykolaiv boxer wins the Ukrainian Cup<\/h2>\n

Korabelov.info reported<\/a> Mykolaiv boxer Maksym Zinevych<\/strong>\u2019s victory at the Ukrainian Men\u2019s Boxing Cup. The competition took place in the Rivne region from October 7 to 13<\/strong>. In the 75 kg<\/strong> weight category, he defeated Maksym Petrynka<\/strong> and Roman Krainyk<\/strong>, then beat Artem Haluzynskyi<\/strong> in the final to claim the gold medal.<\/p>\n

October 14, 2024<\/strong>: government funding to be sought for Mykolaiv\u2019s new water pipeline<\/h2>\n

Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych<\/strong> said<\/a> that international financial institutions had declined to fund the accelerated construction of a new water pipeline under the proposed arrangement. The plan involved laying approximately 60 kilometers<\/strong> of pipeline from Nova Odesa to restore normal water supply to Mykolaiv<\/strong>. On this day in Ukraine: a new holiday honoring defenders<\/h2>\n

On October 14, 2014<\/strong>, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko<\/strong> signed a decree establishing<\/a> Defenders of Ukraine Day. The holiday was linked to the traditions of the Ukrainian Cossacks and the Feast of the Protection of the Holy Mother of God. Since 2023<\/strong>, Defenders of Ukraine Day has officially been observed on October 1<\/strong>, rather than October 14<\/strong>, following a calendar reform.<\/p>\n

For Korabelnyi District<\/strong> and Mykolaiv<\/strong>, this date has become a reminder both of individual lives and of the struggle for Ukraine.
