The new rules will take effect on <strong>November 1<\/strong>: platforms will be required to verify users\u2019 ages and prevent anyone below the threshold from registering.<\/p>\n<p>The requirements have already been published in the country\u2019s official gazette. They follow legislative changes set out in a bill that the <strong>Turkish parliament<\/strong> passed in <strong>April<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When creating a new account, users will have to verify their age using a special token linked to <strong>Turkey\u2019s<\/strong> government e-services system. Existing accounts will have a transition period: platforms must complete verification of account holders by <strong>March 31, 2027<\/strong>. Accounts belonging to children under <strong>15<\/strong> will have to be closed.<\/p>\n<p>Users aged <strong>15\u201317<\/strong> will be allowed to remain on social media, but their accounts will be subject to separate requirements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>profiles must be private by default;<\/li>\n<li>published content must be filtered;<\/li>\n<li>personalized ads must not be shown to these users;<\/li>\n<li>they will be prohibited from livestreaming;<\/li>\n<li>platforms must introduce technical measures to prevent screenshots from being taken in these accounts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Social media platforms are also required to provide parents with tools to monitor their children\u2019s accounts. These must allow parents to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>manage account settings;<\/li>\n<li>limit time spent on the platform;<\/li>\n<li>approve paid transactions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Companies that fail to comply may face fines of up to <strong>3%<\/strong> of a platform\u2019s global revenue.
