Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko<\/strong> has urged residents with relatives or friends outside the capital to consider temporarily relocating. The appeal comes amid intensifying Russian attacks, damage to critical infrastructure, and additional risks ahead of winter.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, this is a matter of survival,\u201d said Vitaliy Klitschko<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

At the same time, the mayor stressed that his appeal does not mean a complete evacuation of the city. He called depopulating Ukrainian cities Putin\u2019s<\/strong> goal.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is Putin\u2019s<\/strong> goal\u2026 The best-case scenario for Putin<\/strong> is for us all to leave and hand him our empty cities and our country,\u201d said Klitschko<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In recent weeks, Russia<\/strong> has intensified its daytime missile and drone attacks on the capital. Critical infrastructure facilities and bridges across the Dnipro<\/strong> have come under attack. Attacks on the city\u2019s energy system have also resumed, causing power outages.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery day, there are new reports of destroyed buildings, injured people, or people tragically killed as shelling of our city intensifies,\u201d Klitschko<\/strong> said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Figures from the Department of Health of the Kyiv City State Administration<\/strong> show that Russian attacks have claimed the lives of at least 534 people<\/strong> in the capital since 2022<\/strong>. Since the beginning of 2026<\/strong>, 189 people<\/strong> have been killed \u2014 more than in all of 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, October 8<\/strong>, Russian strikes on Kyiv<\/strong> killed three people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Connectivity between the two banks of the Dnipro<\/strong> remains a separate concern: attacks have repeatedly forced restrictions on bridge traffic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe connection between the left and right banks is one<\/strong> of the key factors in the city\u2019s ability to function,\u201d Klitschko<\/strong> noted.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To ease the burden on transport, the city authorities are developing alternative pontoon crossings. The capital\u2019s population, including people who commute there for work, is estimated at around 3.5 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Recent attacks have also led to rolling power cuts. At the beginning of the week, some districts of the city were left without water for several hours. After the mayor\u2019s interview, disruptions to the electricity supply temporarily halted the operation of the Kyiv Metro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Klitschko<\/strong> warned that damage to the water supply system could trigger a large-scale crisis.<\/p>\n

As they prepare the capital for possible further winter attacks, the city authorities are working to build up the following reserves:<\/p>\n
