A court in Kyiv<\/strong> found a 50-year-old<\/strong> man guilty of raping his 22-year-old<\/strong> stepdaughter, who has a mental illness, and sentenced him to 8 years<\/strong> in prison. The Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office<\/strong> reported the verdict.<\/p>\n

The man was detained in August 2024<\/strong> when the woman’s pregnancy became known. She has had a mental illness since birth and perceives reality at the level of a child approximately from 5 to 10 years old<\/strong>. Her mother is her guardian and left the daughter under the man’s supervision.<\/p>\n

According to the prosecutor’s office, the stepfather took advantage of the stepdaughter’s helpless state and engaged in sexual relations with her. The mother learned about her daughter’s pregnancy during a gynecologist visit. A few months later the woman gave birth to a baby girl.<\/p>\n

An examination confirmed that the child’s biological father is the woman’s stepfather. He had been living with the family since 2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

During the trial the man did not plead guilty. He insisted that the stepdaughter allegedly consented to sexual relations and claimed they had a romantic relationship. Witnesses, however, confirmed that due to her mental condition the woman’s developmental level corresponds to that of a child.<\/p>\n

The prosecutor sought the maximum possible sentence \u2014 10 years<\/strong> imprisonment. The court sentenced the man to 8 years<\/strong> in prison.<\/p>\n

After the verdict was announced the convict attempted to injure himself in the abdomen with an object resembling a knife that he had brought to court. The injury was not life-threatening, so hospitalization was not required. The man was taken into custody directly in the courtroom.<\/p>\n

The family did not take the newborn girl. The child was placed for adoption.<\/p>\n
