On September 6<\/strong> a local resident contacted the police and reported damage to a grave at the cemetery in the Varvarivka<\/strong> neighborhood in Mykolaiv<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

At the scene, law enforcement officers recorded damage to the tombstone slabs at the grave indicated by the complainant, as well as at two<\/strong> additional burial sites.<\/p>\n

During investigative and operational actions, police established that a 35-year-old<\/strong> local resident was involved in damaging the tombstones. According to the man, he was intoxicated when he had a sudden outburst of aggression. It was then, he explained, that he damaged the tombstones.<\/p>\n

Investigators opened a criminal proceeding under Part 1 of Article 297 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine<\/strong> \u2014 for desecration of a grave and other burial sites motivated by hooliganism.<\/p>\n

The article’s penalty provides for up to three years<\/strong> imprisonment. Currently the question of notifying the suspect of suspicion and selecting a preventive measure for him is being decided. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n
