September 4<\/strong> in the history of Mykolaiv<\/strong> combined sporting pride, wartime destruction and the long\u2011awaited restoration of water supply. On this day the most decorated Ukrainian Olympian, Olha Kharlan<\/strong>, was born, and 35 years<\/strong> later the government announced the launch of a new main water pipeline to the city.<\/p>\n

September 4, 1990<\/strong>: Olha Kharlan was born in Mykolaiv<\/h2>\n

In Mykolaiv<\/strong> the sabre fencer Olha Kharlan<\/strong> was born. She began fencing in her hometown at age 10<\/strong>, became an Olympic champion twice and after the Paris Games already had six Olympic medals<\/strong> \u2014 the most among Ukrainian athletes.<\/p>\n

September 4, 2019<\/strong>: Karate athletes from Korabelnyi brought home World Championship medals<\/h2>\n

Students of the “Phoenix” club from the Korabelnyi District<\/strong> returned<\/a> with awards from the World Championship in Goju\u2011ryu karate. Local athletes represented Mykolaiv<\/strong> as part of the Ukrainian team and won medals in individual and team events.<\/p>\n

September 4, 2020<\/strong>: Port “Olvia” reported a sharp increase in cargo handling<\/h2>\n

The port “Olvia,” located in the Korabelnyi District<\/strong>, reported<\/a> that over the first 8 months of 2020<\/strong> it handled 2.6 million tonnes<\/strong> of cargo \u2014 51.5%<\/strong> more than in the same period the previous year.<\/p>\n

September 4, 2022<\/strong>: Russian forces massively shelled Mykolaiv<\/h2>\n

On the night of September 4, 2022<\/strong> Russian forces carried out a massive shelling<\/a> of Mykolaiv<\/strong>. Damage affected 26 residential buildings<\/strong>, three hospitals<\/strong>, three educational institutions<\/strong>, a hotel and a museum; at least 74 windows<\/strong> were blown out in the houses.<\/p>\n

September 4, 2025<\/strong>: government announced the launch of a new water pipeline<\/h2>\n

Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko<\/strong> announced<\/a> the start of supplying water from a new main pipeline to the systems and reservoirs of “Mykolaivvodokanal.” The pipeline was designed for 120,000 m\u00b3<\/strong> of water per day for the city; at the same time a full replacement of salty water in the networks was expected within the next two weeks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

September 4, 1985<\/strong>: Vasyl Stus died in a Soviet camp<\/h3>\n

On the night of September 3\u20134, 1985<\/strong> the Ukrainian poet and human rights defender Vasyl Stus<\/strong> died<\/a> in the punishment cell of a maximum\u2011security camp in the settlement of Kuchino<\/strong>. He was buried in an unmarked grave, and in 1989<\/strong> was reburied in Kyiv<\/strong> at Baikove Cemetery.<\/p>\n

That was September 4<\/strong> for the Korabelnyi District<\/strong> and Mykolaiv<\/strong>: sporting victories and port development, wartime destruction and the first step toward the return of fresh water.<\/p>\n
