2 September<\/strong> in the history of Mykolaiv combined Stalinist repressions against the Ukrainian intelligentsia, an important decision for the city’s shipbuilding, and the memory of a former city leader. On the same day Ukraine began a monetary reform, and the world formally saw the end of World War II.<\/p>\n

2 September 1937: Mykola Lahuta was arrested for the second time in Mykolaiv<\/h2>\n

The NKVD arrested the Ukrainian historian, local historian, archaeologist and educator Mykola Lahuta<\/strong>. He taught Ukrainian language and literature, worked at the Mykolaiv museum and compiled the “Chronology of the main historical events of the city of Mykolaiv”. On 15 November the UNKVD troika sentenced the scholar to death, and on 25 November he was executed. In 1957 Lahuta was rehabilitated. Sources: State Archive of the Mykolaiv Region<\/a>,<\/p>\n

2 September 1968: a new design for the cruiser “Kyiv” was chosen for the Black Sea Shipbuilding Plant (ChSZ)<\/h2>\n

By government decree No.685\u2013251 the construction in Mykolaiv of the third cruiser of project 1123.3 was stopped and it was decided to build the ship “Kyiv” under the new project 1143<\/strong> at the Black Sea Shipbuilding Plant \u2014 with missile and aviation armament. The lead ship was laid down on 21 July 1970 and launched on 26 December 1972. Later ships of this type were reclassified as heavy aircraft-carrying cruisers. 2 September 2007: Ivan Kanaiev passed away<\/h2>\n

Ivan Kanaiev<\/strong> \u2014 chairman of the city executive committee in 1974\u20131982 and an honorary citizen of the city \u2014 died in Mykolaiv. During his leadership the city actively built housing and social facilities; his name is associated with the creation of the children’s town “Kazka” and a new zoo complex.<\/p>\n

2 September 1996: a monetary reform began in Ukraine<\/h2>\n

The National Bank introduced the hryvnia<\/strong> into cash circulation. The reform lasted until 16 September: Ukrainian karbovanets were exchanged at the rate of 100,000 karbovantsi to one hryvnia<\/strong>. Prices, wages, pensions, scholarships and account balances were recalculated in hryvnias.<\/p>\n

2 September 1945: World War II formally ended<\/h2>\n

Representatives of Japan and the Allied powers signed the Instrument of Surrender on board the American battleship USS Missouri<\/strong> in Tokyo Bay. The document ended Japan’s hostilities and formally concluded World War II.<\/p>\n

Thus 2 September<\/strong> remained in history: a day marked by the destruction of Mykolaiv’s intelligentsia by the totalitarian regime, a new stage in the city’s shipbuilding, the memory of Ivan Kanaiev, and the birth of the modern Ukrainian hryvnia.<\/p>\n
