August 24, 2026<\/strong> Ukraine marks 35 years<\/strong> since the proclamation of independence. For Mykolaiv<\/strong> this date also left a noticeable mark: ship launches from old admiralty yards, the return of the cargo fleet to the Southern Bug<\/strong>, celebrations in the Korablevnyi District<\/strong>, a fire in the Balabanivskyi forest and a Russian strike on port infrastructure.<\/p>\n

August 24, 1830 and 1839<\/strong>: warships were launched in Mykolaiv<\/h2>\n

Mykolaiv historical chronicles recorded that on August 24, 1830<\/strong> at the Spassky Admiralty of Mykolaiv<\/strong> the 84-gun<\/strong> ship “Pamyat Evstafiya” was launched, and on August 24, 1839<\/strong> at the Mykolaiv Admiralty the 16-gun<\/strong> sailing schooner “Zabiyaka” was launched. An important calendar note: these dates are given according to the then Julian calendar, so by the modern Gregorian calendar both events fall on September 5<\/strong> of the respective year.<\/p>\n

August 24, 2014<\/strong>: a downpour didn\u2019t spoil the celebration in Bohoyavlensky Park<\/h2>\n

In Bohoyavlensky Park in the Korablevnyi District they celebrated<\/a> the 23rd anniversary<\/strong> of Ukraine\u2019s Independence. Before the ceremonies began the district was hit by a heavy downpour, but the celebration under the slogan of unity under the Ukrainian flag still took place.<\/p>\n

August 24, 2016<\/strong>: the cargo fleet returned to the Southern Bug after a quarter century<\/h2>\n

After dredging of the Voznesensk \u2013 Mykolaiv<\/strong> section about 134 km<\/strong> of the Southern Bug became navigable, and on August 24, 2016<\/strong> the cargo fleet arrived in Voznesensk<\/strong> for the first time in roughly 25 years<\/strong>. The company “NIBULON<\/strong>” reported the resumption of transport after completing the first stage of dredging, which provided a depth of about 2 m<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

August 24, 2020<\/strong>: firefighters extinguished a fire in the Balabanivskyi forest<\/h2>\n

On Independence Day rescuers from the Korablevnyi District had to extinguish<\/a> the conifer needle layer in the Balabanivskyi forest tract. The report of a fire came in at 14:45<\/strong>, and by 16:45<\/strong> the fire was put out; according to rescuers, the cause of the ignition was arson.<\/p>\n

August 24, 2022<\/strong>: Russians struck Mykolaiv\u2019s port infrastructure with \u201cSmerch\u201d rockets<\/h2>\n

On the evening of Independence Day Russian forces shelled Mykolaiv<\/strong> with rockets from the “Smerch” system. The strike was aimed at the city\u2019s port infrastructure; there were no human casualties.<\/p>\n

August 24, 2023<\/strong>: servicemen in Mykolaiv received housing certificates<\/h2>\n

In Mykolaiv<\/strong> four servicemen<\/strong> were presented<\/a> with certificates for the purchase of housing. Mass official celebrations were not held in the city that year due to war risks and the threat of Russian attacks.<\/p>\n

August 24, 1991<\/strong> the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR adopted<\/a> the Act proclaiming Ukraine\u2019s independence, declaring it an independent democratic state. And on August 24, 1949<\/strong> the North Atlantic Treaty came into force, which became the legal basis of NATO.<\/p>\n

Such is the history of August 24<\/strong> for Mykolaiv<\/strong> and the Korablevnyi District: from ships of old shipyards and the revival of navigation to celebrations under Ukrainian flags and a war in which the port city continues to fight for the independence proclaimed 35 years<\/strong> ago.<\/p>\n
