23 August<\/strong> in the history of Mykolaiv<\/strong> is connected with shipbuilding, the people who designed warships, and the modern tradition of the Day of the National Flag. And one of the oldest dates requires an important calendar clarification: the archival 23 August 1788<\/strong> is already 3 September<\/strong> in the modern calendar.<\/p>\n

23 August 1788 (old style)<\/strong>: the start of the shipyard on the Inhul<\/h2>\n

In a local history work citing documents from the State Archive of Mykolaiv Oblast it is noted<\/a> that the laying of a shipyard on the left bank of the Inhul \u2014 the future Mykolaiv Admiralty \u2014 is dated precisely to 23 August 1788<\/strong>. The date is given according to the Julian calendar used at the time by the Russian Empire: by the modern Gregorian calendar this is 3 September 1788<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

23 August 1919<\/strong>: the future designer of nuclear submarines was born in Mykolaiv<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On this day in Mykolaiv<\/strong> Heorhii Mykolaiovych Chernyshov<\/strong> was born \u2014 a shipbuilder who became the chief designer of nuclear submarines. The historical date is recorded in Mykolaiv chronicles, and his contribution to the creation of the nuclear submarine fleet is also described in a scholarly publication of the National University of Shipbuilding.<\/p>\n

23 August 1936<\/strong>: destroyers were laid down at the Mykolaiv plant<\/h2>\n

At Plant No. 200<\/strong> named after the 61 Communard<\/strong> in Mykolaiv<\/strong> on this day a Project 7<\/strong> destroyer \u201c“Bditelny”\u201d with hull number 1070<\/strong> was laid down, as recorded in the ship registry. That same 23 August 1936<\/strong> the enterprise also laid down \u201c“Besshumny”\u201d \u2014 the future destroyer \u201cSvobodny\u201d.<\/p>\n

23 August 2012<\/strong>: the best workers were honored at the specialized port \u201cOktyabrsk\u201d<\/h2>\n

On the eve of Independence Day at the specialized seaport \u201cOktyabrsk\u201d in the Korabelnyi District they opened<\/a> an Honor Board \u201c“Best in Profession”\u201d displaying photographs of the enterprise\u2019s best employees. The ceremony took place on 23 August 2012<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

23 August 2019<\/strong>: a large flag was raised in the Korabelnyi District<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Near the administration of the Korabelnyi District residents gathered<\/a> for a ceremony for the Day of the National Flag of Ukraine. The large blue-and-yellow banner was raised by a representative of the district administration and young athletes from Youth Sports School No. 5<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

23 August 2025<\/strong>: the largest flag of the region was raised in Mykolaiv<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On the Day of the National Flag in Mykolaiv<\/strong> they raised<\/a> the largest flag of the Mykolaiv region<\/strong>. Before the ceremony attendees honored the fallen defenders of Ukraine with a minute of silence and laid flowers at the monuments to Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko<\/strong> and Vyacheslav Maksymovych Chornovil<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On this day in Ukraine and the world<\/h2>\n

23 August 2004<\/strong> the President of Ukraine by decree No. 987\/2004<\/strong> established<\/a> the annual celebration of the Day of the National Flag of Ukraine. 23 August 1939<\/strong> Germany and the USSR signed the Molotov\u2013Ribbentrop Pact with a secret protocol on the division of spheres of influence in Eastern Europe, as reminded by the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance here<\/a>. And exactly 50 years<\/strong> later, on 23 August 1989<\/strong>, about 2 million<\/strong> residents of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia formed the \u201cBaltic Way\u201d \u2014 a human chain approximately 600 km<\/strong> long.<\/p>\n

For Mykolaiv<\/strong> this date is especially telling: behind a single calendar day stand both the beginnings of the local shipbuilding history, the fate of an outstanding designer, and the ships of Mykolaiv\u2019s shipyards. And for the Korabelnyi District<\/strong> 23 August<\/strong> for many years has remained the day when the blue-and-yellow flag is solemnly raised over the district.<\/p>\n
