21 August<\/strong> in the history of Mykolaiv<\/strong> combined culture, shipbuilding, political confrontations and tragedies. In the Korablev District on that day a fatal accident occurred at “Nika-Tera”<\/strong>, the “Okean”<\/strong> shipyard demonstrated its capabilities for military shipbuilding, and the Palace of Culture “Korablev”<\/strong> lost the longtime leader of a well-known vocal ensemble.<\/p>\n

21 August 1953<\/strong>: Mykolaiv poet Dmytro Dmytrovych Kremen<\/strong> was born<\/h2>\n

In the village of Sukha in Zakarpattia the future poet, publicist, translator and teacher Dmytro Dmytrovych Kremen<\/strong> was born. After graduating from university he moved to the Mykolaiv region and later settled in Mykolaiv<\/strong>. In 1999<\/strong> the poet became a laureate of the Shevchenko Prize for the collection “Pectoral”, and in 2016<\/strong> he was recognized as the “Person of the Year” in Mykolaiv<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

21 August 2012<\/strong>: a language decision in Mykolaiv accompanied by fights and a smoke grenade<\/h2>\n

The Mykolaiv City Council granted the Russian language regional status: the decision was supported by 60 deputies<\/strong>, 4<\/strong> abstained, and another 4<\/strong> did not vote. Rallies of supporters and opponents of the decision took place in front of the mayor’s office, and “Korabeliv.Info” recorded<\/a> clashes, smoke grenades and detentions of protest participants.<\/p>\n

21 August 2019<\/strong>: Nika-Tera workers fell from a height of about 15 meters<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On the territory of the “Nika-Tera”<\/strong> port in the Korablev District of Mykolaiv<\/strong>, two workers were performing welding work at a height of about 15 meters<\/strong> and fell down. One man died on the spot; the other was hospitalized in serious condition. Following the tragedy, the police opened<\/a> a criminal case for violations of safety rules during work with increased danger.<\/p>\n

21 August 2020<\/strong>: “Okean” demonstrated capabilities for building military ships<\/h2>\n

The Okean shipbuilding plant in the Korablev District was visited<\/a> by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Strategic Industries Oleh Uruskyi<\/strong>. He was shown the enterprise’s capabilities for building and repairing military ships, new equipment for metalworking and hull assembly, as well as its readiness to work on defense orders.<\/p>\n

21 August 2022<\/strong>: the Palace of Culture “Korablev” lost the leader of the ensemble “Okeanochka”<\/h2>\n

On this day Sergiy Fedorovych Reutov<\/strong> \u2014 the longtime leader of the People’s Vocal Ensemble “Okeanochka” and the ensemble “Lymans\u02b9ki Zori” of the Mykolaiv City Palace of Culture “Korablev” \u2014 passed away. His colleagues and members of the ensembles reported<\/a> the loss.<\/p>\n

21 August 2022<\/strong>: at about 01:00<\/strong> Russians struck Mykolaiv with S-300 missiles<\/h2>\n

At night Russian forces shelled<\/a> Mykolaiv<\/strong> with S-300 missiles. One hit struck the territory of an enterprise, damaging construction equipment; others hit the outskirts of the city. According to preliminary data, there were no casualties.<\/p>\n

21 August 2023<\/strong>: Mykolaiv commemorated Dmytro Kremen<\/h2>\n

On the 70th anniversary<\/strong> of the birth of Dmytro Dmytrovych Kremen<\/strong>, a memorial plaque to the poet was unveiled in Mykolaiv in the square near the Central City Library named after Mark Kropyvnytskyi. Thus the date of his birth became for the city also a day of honoring the memory of one of Mykolaiv’s most famous writers.<\/p>\n

21 August 2025<\/strong>: searches were carried out at Mykolaiv City Hall over a waste sorting line<\/h2>\n

In the building of the Mykolaiv City Council law enforcement officers conducted<\/a> searches related to the tender for creating a household waste sorting line in Mykolaiv<\/strong>. Investigators seized documents related to the selection of the investor; a criminal proceeding was initiated after reports of possible violations during the project’s implementation.<\/p>\n

On this day in Ukraine and the world<\/h2>\n

21 August 1968<\/strong> the troops of the USSR and other Warsaw Pact countries crushed<\/a> the “Prague Spring” in Czechoslovakia. And on 21 August 1991<\/strong> the GKChP coup in Moscow failed<\/a> – the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance notes that its defeat accelerated the formal proclamation of Ukraine’s independence on 24 August 1991<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That is how 21 August<\/strong> remained in the history of Mykolaiv<\/strong> and the Korablev District: a tragedy at a port enterprise, hopes for the revival of military shipbuilding at “Okean”, the loss of a well-known cultural figure, Russian missiles and events that changed the city itself.<\/p>\n
