On this day one of the city&#8217;s most famous libraries was founded, in <strong>1941<\/strong> Mykolaiv was on the brink of Nazi occupation, and in <strong>2022<\/strong> Russian forces again struck residential neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>14 August 1900<\/strong>: a library was founded in Mykolaiv that today bears the name of Kropyvnytskyi<\/h2>\n<p>On this day the current Central City Library named after M.L. Kropyvnytskyi was founded \u2014 initially as a branch of the Mykolaiv Public Library. The Mykolaiv City Council&#8217;s Department of Culture <a href=\"https:\/\/cultura.mkrada.gov.ua\/tvoya-biblioteka-poruch-120-rokiv\/\">noted<\/a> that the founding date is <strong>1 August 1900 Old Style<\/strong>, i.e. <strong>14 August by the modern calendar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>14 August 1941<\/strong>: Mykolaiv was being prepared for abandonment, shipbuilding plants were destroyed<\/h2>\n<p>A critical situation was developing on the approaches to <strong>Mykolaiv<\/strong>. Mykolaiv historian <strong>Yurii Kotliar<\/strong> recounted that on <strong>14 August 1941<\/strong> Soviet troops were leaving the city to avoid being encircled. In those days, during the evacuation, equipment was disabled and parts of the capacities of Mykolaiv\u2019s shipbuilding plants were blown up; the city&#8217;s occupation finally began a few days later.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>14 August 2022<\/strong>: Russians struck Mykolaiv with &#8220;Smerch&#8221; and S-300<\/h2>\n<p>On the night of <strong>14 August 2022<\/strong> Russian forces again shelled <strong>Mykolaiv<\/strong>. As <a href=\"https:\/\/korabelov.info\/ru\/2022\/08\/255780\/nochju-nikolaev-obstrelyali-smerchem-i-raketami-s-300\/\">reported<\/a> &#8220;Korabelov.Info&#8221;, a residential area was hit by the MLRS <strong>&#8220;Smerch&#8221;<\/strong>, and in another attack S-300 system missiles were used. There was information about <strong>one wounded civilian<\/strong>, and damage to civilian infrastructure and communications.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>14 August 2024<\/strong>: more than 18 thousand ragweed plants were collected in Mykolaiv in one day<\/h2>\n<p>In <strong>Mykolaiv<\/strong>, during a city campaign against ragweed, <a href=\"https:\/\/korabelov.info\/2024\/08\/467655\/18-tysiach-nebezpechnykh-roslyn-za-odyn-den-mykolaiv-proty-ambrozii\/\">they collected<\/a> <strong>18,203 plants<\/strong> on the first day. Volunteers and municipal workers were involved in the fight against the dangerous allergen, and the collected plants were handed over for disposal.<\/p>\n<h2>On this day in Ukraine and the world<\/h2>\n<p><strong>14 August 1941<\/strong> US President <strong>Franklin Roosevelt<\/strong> and British Prime Minister <strong>Winston Churchill<\/strong> published the Atlantic Charter \u2014 a declaration of principles for the postwar world order that later influenced the formation of the <strong>United Nations<\/strong>.
