7 August<\/strong> in the history of Mykolaiv<\/strong> combined the appearance of the city’s first rail transport, a large order for shipbuilders, a Russian strike on an industrial suburb and an Olympic success by a graduate of Mykolaiv’s wrestling school.<\/p>\n

7 August 1897<\/strong>: Mykolaiv residents rode the “horse-drawn tram” for the first time<\/h2>\n

Regular passenger service of the horse-drawn tram in Mykolaiv<\/strong> began<\/a> on 26 July 1897<\/strong> Old Style, which corresponds to 7 August<\/strong> in the modern calendar. The first line connected<\/span> the Bazaar Square with the Military Market. The State Archive of the Mykolaiv Region indicates<\/a> 25 July<\/strong> Old Style, i.e. 6 August<\/strong>, as the day of the opening: that day the blessing and a ceremonial event took place, and the next day regular passenger services began.<\/p>\n

7 August 2019<\/strong>: three bridges were opened for a naval ship<\/h2>\n

The medium landing ship of the Ukrainian Navy “Yuriy Olefirenko” entered the waters of the Mykolaiv Shipbuilding Plant<\/strong>; to allow it to pass in Mykolaiv<\/strong>, the Inhul, Pivdennobuzkyi and the pedestrian bridges were opened. This was the plant’s first repair order after repaying more than UAH 86 million<\/strong> of debt, and about 50 workers<\/strong> were planned to be involved in repairing the engines and the bow ramp.<\/p>\n

7 August 2022<\/strong>: Russians struck industrial enterprises<\/h2>\n

At about 04:00<\/strong>, Russian forces shelled industrial enterprises on the outskirts of Mykolaiv<\/strong>. Korabelov.info reported<\/a> that the Korablevnyi District<\/strong> was also hit. According to preliminary data, there were no deaths or injuries, but the names of the attacked enterprises and the final scale of the damage were not specified in available reports.<\/p>\n

7 August 2024<\/strong>: Parviz Nasibov<\/strong> reached the Olympic final<\/h2>\n

A product of Mykolaiv’s Greco-Roman wrestling school, Parviz Nasibov<\/strong>, in the up to 67 kg<\/strong> weight category defeated Azerbaijan’s Khasrat Jafarov<\/strong> with a 3:3<\/strong> score on tie-breaking criteria and advanced<\/a> to the final of the Olympic Games in Paris. The next day the athlete won his second consecutive Olympic silver medal.<\/p>\n

7 August 1932<\/strong>: the “law of five ears” was adopted<\/h2>\n

The Soviet authorities adopted<\/a> the decree “On the Protection of Property of State Enterprises, Kolkhozes and Cooperatives”, known as the “law of five ears”. Appropriation of kolkhoz property was punishable by execution, and for “mitigating circumstances” the penalty was at least 10 years<\/strong> imprisonment. Researchers of the history of the Mykolaiv region<\/strong> called this document one of the first steps toward mass famine and repressions against Ukrainian peasants.<\/p>\n

Thus 7 August<\/strong> left in the memory of Mykolaiv<\/strong> several different eras at once: from the first “horse-drawn tram” and the work of shipbuilders to a wartime shelling and a Mykolaiv athlete’s fight for Olympic gold.<\/p>\n
