{"id":599578,"date":"2026-07-22T11:37:02","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T08:37:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/korabelov.info\/2026\/07\/599578\/what-is-known-about-the-new-commander-in-chief-of-the-armed-forces-of-ukraine-mykhailo-drapatyi\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T11:37:05","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T08:37:05","slug":"what-is-known-about-the-new-commander-in-chief-of-the-armed-forces-of-ukraine-mykhailo-drapatyi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/korabelov.info\/en\/2026\/07\/599578\/what-is-known-about-the-new-commander-in-chief-of-the-armed-forces-of-ukraine-mykhailo-drapatyi\/","title":{"rendered":"What is known about the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Mykhailo Drapatyi?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"981\" data-end=\"1147\">President of Ukraine <strong data-start=\"999\" data-end=\"1023\">Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/strong> in the evening of <strong data-start=\"1032\" data-end=\"1054\">21 July 2026 announced that the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is to be Mykhailo Drapatyi.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1149\" data-end=\"1325\">According to the head of state, together with <strong data-start=\"1184\" data-end=\"1205\">Mykhailo Drapatyi<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1207\" data-end=\"1226\">Yevhen Khmara<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1230\" data-end=\"1248\">Pavlo Palisa<\/strong> they have already determined how the configuration of the <strong data-start=\"1298\" data-end=\"1324\">General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine<\/strong> should be renewed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1327\" data-end=\"1485\">Zelenskyy also thanked <strong data-start=\"1354\" data-end=\"1378\">Oleksandr Syrskyi<\/strong>, noting his role in the <strong data-start=\"1403\" data-end=\"1420\">defense of Kyiv<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"1422\" data-end=\"1459\">Kharkiv offensive operation<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"1463\" data-end=\"1484\">Kursk operation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote-light\">\n<p data-start=\"1487\" data-end=\"1740\">&#8220;A significant path has been travelled, Ukraine&#8217;s defense continues, and a dignified attitude toward every warrior is needed. I am grateful<strong> Oleksandr Syrskyi<\/strong> and each of our soldiers for Ukraine&#8217;s strong frontline positions. I am grateful<strong> Mykhailo Drapatyi<\/strong> for precisely this outlook&#8221;, \u2014 the President said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1742\" data-end=\"1875\">He added that together with <strong data-start=\"1765\" data-end=\"1789\">Oleksandr Syrskyi<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1793\" data-end=\"1813\">Andrii Hnatov<\/strong> he discussed further formats of service and the correct handover of affairs.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote-light\">\n<p data-start=\"1877\" data-end=\"2145\">&#8220;Our desire is one \u2014 victory over the enemy and achieving such conditions on the front and in the pressure on Russia that would force Russia to make peace. Tomorrow we will formalize all decisions. Ukraine must come out of this situation stronger, and it will be harder for Russia&#8221;, \u2014 said <strong>Zelenskyy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"2147\" data-end=\"2596\"><strong data-start=\"2147\" data-end=\"2177\">Mykhailo Drapatyi is 43 years old.<\/strong> He is a <strong data-start=\"2182\" data-end=\"2199\">major general<\/strong>, a professional military officer and a tanker by education. In <strong data-start=\"2248\" data-end=\"2261\">2014<\/strong> Drapatyi commanded the <strong data-start=\"2282\" data-end=\"2328\">2nd mechanized battalion of the 72nd brigade<\/strong>. <strong data-start=\"2330\" data-end=\"2342\">On 9 May<\/strong> that year his unit received an order to break through to the seized police headquarters and help free the hostages. A video in which an infantry fighting vehicle (BMP) of his unit flew over a barricade of supporters of the &#8220;Russian world&#8221; became one of the symbols of the start of the war.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/telegram.org\/js\/telegram-widget.js?24\" data-telegram-post=\"korabelov_info\/118803\" data-width=\"100%\"><\/script><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"2598\" data-end=\"2901\">In the summer of <strong data-start=\"2605\" data-end=\"2618\">2014<\/strong> Drapatyi took charge of organizing the breakout of Ukrainian units from encirclement near <strong data-start=\"2701\" data-end=\"2715\">Izvaryne<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2719\" data-end=\"2742\">Chervonopartyzansk<\/strong>. According to published data, his group then evacuated about <strong data-start=\"2795\" data-end=\"2822\">260 servicemen<\/strong> and more than <strong data-start=\"2831\" data-end=\"2853\">30 pieces of equipment<\/strong>, fighting their way for over <strong data-start=\"2882\" data-end=\"2900\">160 kilometres<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2903\" data-end=\"3095\">After the events of <strong data-start=\"2915\" data-end=\"2928\">2014<\/strong> he returned to the front as chief of staff of the <strong data-start=\"2971\" data-end=\"3001\">30th mechanized brigade<\/strong>, although he could have continued full-time studies at the military university. His call sign is \u2014 <strong data-start=\"3083\" data-end=\"3094\">&#8220;Rubin&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3097\" data-end=\"3330\">In <strong data-start=\"3099\" data-end=\"3112\">2021<\/strong> Drapatyi was recognized as the best graduate at the operational-strategic level of the <strong data-start=\"3184\" data-end=\"3222\">National Defence University<\/strong>. Then the British Ambassador <strong data-start=\"3252\" data-end=\"3271\">Melinda Simmons<\/strong> presented him with the transitional <strong data-start=\"3296\" data-end=\"3329\">Queen&#8217;s sword of the United Kingdom<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3332\" data-end=\"3645\">During the full-scale war Drapatyi commanded forces in the south. The grouping subordinate to him, <strong data-start=\"3432\" data-end=\"3445\">&#8220;Kakhovka&#8221;<\/strong>, liberated settlements in <strong data-start=\"3472\" data-end=\"3487\">Kherson<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"3491\" data-end=\"3521\">Dnipropetrovsk oblasts<\/strong> and advanced into the defense of Russian forces by <strong data-start=\"3567\" data-end=\"3585\">6\u201323 kilometres<\/strong>. For these actions Drapatyi was awarded the <strong data-start=\"3618\" data-end=\"3644\">Cross of Combat Merit<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3647\" data-end=\"3909\">In <strong data-start=\"3649\" data-end=\"3662\">2024<\/strong> he was sent to the <strong data-start=\"3681\" data-end=\"3705\">Kharkiv direction<\/strong> during the Russian offensive in the north of Kharkiv oblast. Drapatyi headed the <strong data-start=\"3782\" data-end=\"3798\">OTU &#8220;Kharkiv&#8221;<\/strong>, and Zelenskyy later stated that the general organized the defense and effectively thwarted the Russian offensive operation.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3911\" data-end=\"4237\">Drapatyi is also called the <strong data-start=\"3937\" data-end=\"3960\">&#8220;firefighter of the front&#8221;<\/strong>, as he was repeatedly redeployed to the most problematic sectors \u2014 <strong data-start=\"4028\" data-end=\"4042\">Kherson<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"4044\" data-end=\"4058\">Kharkiv<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"4060\" data-end=\"4083\">Luhansk direction<\/strong>, and later the <strong data-start=\"4096\" data-end=\"4113\">eastern front<\/strong>.
