On the social network Threads<\/a> a story is gaining popularity about the Hero of Ukraine, naval aviation colonel Ihor Bedzai<\/strong>, in whose honor the former Chkalov Street in Mykolaiv<\/strong> was renamed. The post was published by a woman named Maria<\/strong>, whose family is directly connected to the legendary Ukrainian pilot\u2019s final decision.<\/p>\n

According to the author, before his last sortie the experienced colonel decided to replace a young pilot in the crew. That man had a child born shortly before.<\/p>\n

“Every time I see or hear about Ihor Bedzai Street in Mykolaiv, the thought immediately comes to mind that at the last moment he took the place of a young pilot who had recently become a father and flew to Snake Island in his stead. And he did not return. <\/em>That young pilot is my husband, and that child is our son. We are all immeasurably indebted to the Hero,” – Maria said.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

According to official sources, Ihor Bedzai\u2019s last flight took place on May 7, 2022<\/strong>. The colonel replaced a young pilot who had a child born in February and joined a search-and-rescue mission in the area of the Danube<\/strong> River estuary.<\/p>\n

A naval Mi-14 helicopter was attacked by a Russian Su-30 fighter. Thanks to the Ukrainian pilot\u2019s skill the crew managed to evade two cannon bursts, but after that the occupiers launched a guided R-73 missile. It struck the helicopter, on board which there were five<\/strong> Ukrainian servicemen.<\/p>\n

A few years earlier Ihor Bedzai<\/strong> played a key role in saving Ukrainian naval aviation after the start of the Russian occupation of Crimea<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In March 2014<\/strong>, when Russian forces blockaded the airfield in Saky<\/strong>, he ordered Ukrainian aviation equipment to take off. Under conditions of complete radio silence it was possible to move 10<\/strong> planes and helicopters to Mykolaiv<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Over the next five years<\/strong> Ihor Bedzai<\/strong> commanded a naval aviation brigade and took part in combat sorties during the ATO and JFO. In 2019<\/strong> he was appointed deputy commander for aviation of the Ukrainian Naval Forces.<\/p>\n

After his death, on May 11, 2022<\/strong>, Colonel Ihor Bedzai<\/strong> was posthumously awarded the title Hero of Ukraine with the Order of the \u201cGolden Star\u201d. Later the 10th<\/strong> Naval Aviation Brigade was named after him.<\/p>\n

The former Chkalov Street in Mykolaiv<\/strong> was renamed Hero of Ukraine Ihor Bedzai<\/strong> Street in July 2024<\/strong>. Before that it had borne the name of the Soviet pilot Valery Chkalov<\/strong> for more than 80 years<\/strong>. Maria\u2019s story had gathered over 19,000<\/strong> reactions at the time of publication and continued to spread on Threads.<\/p>\n

In the comments, residents of Mykolaiv<\/strong>, servicemen and people from other cities thanked the author for the story. Some confessed that they live on Ihor Bedzai<\/strong> Street but had not previously known the history of the person whose name they see on address plates every day:<\/p>\n

As well as to the fallen Hero, Mr. Ihor!” – wrote user <\/span>olbi_cherson_ukraine.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Users also suggest placing QR codes on the new street name plates. The idea is that passersby could scan the code with their phones and read the biography of the person after whom the street is named:<\/p>\n

“I think it would be appropriate on every street name plate, when it\u2019s a new name in honor of someone, to add a code so that you can open a page with a phone scanner and look, read about the person,” – proposed elenaovcharyk.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Among the commenters are servicemen who personally knew Ihor Bedzai<\/strong> or served under his command. They call him the best commander, a true person and an officer who remained faithful to his military duty until the end.<\/p>\n

The personal story of one family reminded thousands of people that behind the new names of Ukrainian streets there are not abstract surnames, but lives, decisions and feats of people thanks to which others returned to their children.<\/p>\n
