May 21<\/strong> Russia and Belarus completed joint exercises involving elements of nuclear forces, and, according to analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), this indicates the Kremlin’s intent to use Belarusian territory for future military operations.<\/p>\n

The second phase of the maneuvers took place with the participation of Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko. During the exercises Russian forces delivered nuclear munitions to Belarus, and Belarusian units practiced receiving, transporting and the combat use of special warheads for the Iskander-M systems.<\/p>\n

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that during the drills they launched an intercontinental ballistic missile “Yars” from the Plesetsk cosmodrome, the hypersonic missile “Zircon” from the Barents Sea, the “Sineva” missile from a nuclear submarine, as well as cruise missile launches from a MiG-31I aircraft and from an Iskander-M system at the Kapustin Yar test range.<\/p>\n

Putin also announced plans to hold the next joint exercises “Union Shield” in 2027<\/strong>, and analysts believe this cycle could include a full-fledged nuclear component.<\/p>\n

The ISW believes that the deployment of Russian nuclear weapons on Belarusian territory underscores Minsk’s growing dependence on Moscow and the gradual loss of Belarusian sovereignty. Experts recalled that in 2022<\/strong> Belarus changed its Constitution, abandoning its status as a neutral and non-nuclear state.<\/p>\n
