The mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych, signed letters of guarantee for suppliers of feed to the Mykolaiv Zoo to prevent delivery disruptions. However, the problem with paying for purchases remains unresolved: Treasury payments have not been processed for about a month, making it difficult to pay for deliveries on time.

The companies received the documents along with a request not to delay deliveries to the zoo. The facility still has some feed in reserve.

“The city government has no influence over the Treasury. Moreover, this is currently a nationwide issue and a nationwide problem,” said Yurii Liubarov, head of the Department of Culture and Arts of the Mykolaiv City Council, during the “Dialogue” programme.

According to the official, zoo director Volodymyr Topchii is concerned about the situation, as purchasing feed takes time: an order must first be placed, then paid for, and delivery arranged. Liubarov hopes Treasury funding will be unblocked soon and that suppliers will continue delivering products on time.

During a session of the Mykolaiv City Council, the director had already reported that the facility owed a substantial amount for feed. He warned that if the situation worsened further, the animals could be left without the food they need.

The zoo celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. 2026 has been declared the Year of the Zoo in Mykolaiv.
