An elderly woman in Mykolaiv region was hospitalized with burns and poisoning
Rescue personnel were not involved in responding to the incident; the causes are still unknown
In the Mykolaiv region, a woman born in 1947 was hospitalized in the evening. Doctors preliminarily diagnosed poisoning by combustion products and thermal burns of I–II degree. The incident was reported by the Main Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Mykolaiv region. According to Telegram @dsns_mykolaiv.
The causes and circumstances of the incident are still unknown. Rescue units were not involved in its elimination.
The SES emphasize: as temperatures drop, people more often turn on heaters, use stoves, gas heating and other devices for warming. At the same time, the risk of fires, injuries and poisoning by combustion products increases.
During a fire the threat is not only the flames. Toxic combustion products also pose a serious danger, in particular carbon monoxide. It has no color, smell or taste, so a person may not notice how the gas accumulates in a room.
Headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea and drowsiness may indicate carbon monoxide poisoning. At high concentrations a person can lose consciousness and die.
To reduce risks before the start of the heating season and while using heating, rescuers advise:
- Check the condition of stoves, chimneys and ventilation.
- Make sure gas equipment is in working order.
- Do not use faulty or homemade heaters.
- Do not leave electric appliances and heating equipment switched on and unattended.
- Do not block ventilation channels.
- Do not leave children and elderly people unattended near heat sources.
- If possible, install a carbon monoxide detector at home to warn of a dangerous concentration.
A separate rule applies to generators: they should be placed only outdoors, at least six meters from buildings, windows and doors.
If a fire or other emergency occurs, call 101.
