September 24, 1739: the birth of Grigory Potemkin, whose name is linked to the founding of Mykolaiv
Grigory Aleksandrovich Potemkin was born on September 13, 1739 in the Julian calendar, which corresponds to September 24 in the modern Gregorian calendar. The State Archive of Mykolaiv Oblast notes that the history of the founding of Mykolaiv is closely connected with Potemkin: on November 10, 1789 he reported the chosen site for building a shipyard at the mouth of the Inhul into the Southern Bug and proposed the name Mykolaiv for the new town.
September 24, 2004: a monument to Vasyl Sukhomlynskyi was unveiled in Mykolaiv
A monument to the prominent Ukrainian educator Vasyl Oleksandrovych Sukhomlynskyi was solemnly unveiled by the main entrance of the then Mykolaiv State University. As the Mykolaiv Regional Children’s Library recorded, the Teacher’s bust was placed against the backdrop of an open book with the words “I give my heart to children”.
September 24, 2014: Mykolaiv native Mykhailo Kozlov died in Donetsk region
While carrying out a combat mission near Starohnativka in Donetsk region, native of Mykolaiv Mykhailo Vitaliyovych Kozlov — senior gunner of the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade — was killed. The Book of Remembrance reports that at about 18:35 the serviceman received fatal wounds due to the detonation of an explosive device. He was buried in Mykolaiv, and was later posthumously awarded the Order “For Courage” III degree.
September 24, 2017: mass brawl at “Diskus” in the Korabelnyi District
In the morning a mass brawl broke out in the night club “Diskus”, which operated in the former Metallurgists’ Palace of Culture in the Korabelnyi District of Mykolaiv. “Korabeliv.Info” published footage from surveillance cameras: among the injured were 31-year-old Ihor Kochniev, an ATO participant and former “cyborg”, and his friend Vyacheslav Barba. More than 3 years later the outlet reported that the case against 6 defendants had already been assigned to a third judge, and after the preliminary hearing the proceedings had not progressed for a long time.
September 24, 2024: Russian FPV struck a civilian car
At about 14:25 a Russian FPV drone attacked a passenger car in the Kutsurub community of Mykolaiv region. As “Korabeliv.Info” wrote, 2 people were injured: the driver received assistance on site, and the 63-year-old passenger was hospitalized in a stable condition of moderate severity.
