In one of the kindergartens of the Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv, an underground learning space was set up for the institution’s pupils and the students of the nearby gymnasium. Thanks to this, children will be able to return to in-person education without daily commuting to other parts of the city.

The project was implemented in partnership between the savED fund and the international donor LEGO Foundation. The donor financed the repair works and the arrangement of the space for a total of more than 11 million hryvnias.

The shelter can simultaneously accommodate up to 550 people. The walls, ceiling and floor were repaired, necessary utilities were installed, and ventilation and lighting systems were set up. The space was also furnished with bright furniture, interactive toys and teaching materials.

The facility has already passed inspection and was officially accepted by the State Emergency Service (SES).

The new space was inspected by Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych, his deputy Anatoliy Petrov, head of the education department Hanna Lychko, acting head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration Heorhii Reshetilov, head of the office of the Embassy of Denmark in Mykolaiv Jakob Torrild Hansen and representatives of the savED fund.

“Today we saw how the educational process takes place in the new shared shelter for the kindergarten and the school. Everything here has been done with quality and care; the ventilation and lighting systems work — the children feel as if learning is taking place in a regular classroom. At the same time, children in another part of this shelter are already sleeping during quiet hour. I thank our partners — the Danish LEGO Foundation, as well as the implementer of this project, our long-term partner savED. I thank them for this high-quality work and for providing our children with the opportunity to receive education safely. I am confident that with such partners we will stand firm and win,” — said Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych.

The presence of the shelter gives children the opportunity to receive quality and safe education close to home, without the need to travel daily to other districts of the city.
