In the schools of Mykolaiv Oblast, senior high school students will receive monthly training at special "Defense of Ukraine" centers
Children will be taught about mine safety and how to act under rubble
In schools of the Mykolaiv Oblast, high school students will study the subject “Defense of Ukraine” under a new state standard. For in-depth instruction and practice of practical skills, communities are creating special centers for the subject.
This was stated by the director of the Department of Education and Science of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration Alla Velykhovska.
According to her, a “Defense of Ukraine” center is not a single classroom, but a complex of four learning zones. In most cases several rooms are required for its operation. Communities are recommended to equip at least one such center each.
A state subsidy was directed to the creation and equipping of the learning spaces. Communities themselves also took part in outfitting the centers.
It is expected that pupils will spend a full school day in the center once a month. Hot meals are provided for them, and the lessons are to become more intensive and practice-oriented.
A special emphasis will be placed on safety. Students will be taught:
- mine safety rules;
- actions to take during an evacuation;
- how to behave in the event of an emergency;
- what to do if a person is trapped under rubble.
“This is by no means militarization. On the contrary, children are shown the situation we live in. Great attention is paid to mine safety so that children know how to behave correctly, the rules of evacuation, and also what to do if, God forbid, they find themselves under rubble. Unfortunately, today we are forced to prepare children in such a way that they have the possibility to live in such conditions,” — said Alla Velikhovska.
Earlier the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine approved the updated “Defense of Ukraine” program, under which high school students will be taught.
