Reconstruction of sewage treatment facilities has begun in Mykolaiv
Worn reservoirs and aeration tanks partially destroyed by shelling
In Mykolaiv, a large-scale reconstruction of the city’s sewage treatment facilities — one of the key critical infrastructure facilities — has begun. The project is being implemented with the support of the European Investment Bank, the Municipal Enterprise “Mykolaivvodokanal” reported.
The current complex has been operating for many decades and has effectively exhausted its service life. Aeration tanks, settling tanks and concrete reservoirs are at a critical level of wear; part of the facility was also damaged by Russian shelling.
The preparatory phase has been underway for the third month. The contractor “KSM GROUP” is working on site, and heavy and specialized equipment has been deployed.
Old concrete structures are not removed after dismantling: they are crushed directly on site and turned into crushed stone. This material is reused to construct temporary access roads to the facilities.
After the reconstruction is completed, the city is expected to receive a modern high-tech complex that will meet international standards.
The upgrade of the treatment facilities should provide the city with three practical outcomes:
- improve the quality of wastewater treatment and enhance the environmental condition of the Southern Bug basin;
- reduce electricity consumption thanks to modern equipment;
- ensure the reliable and uninterrupted operation of Mykolaiv‘s sewerage system for many years.
