In the Mykolaiv region, the epidemiological situation and water quality are monitored weekly, including testing for the presence of the cholera agent. Laboratory tests are carried out by specialists of the regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention throughout the summer, as the risk of intestinal infections increases during this period.

Over the past week, specialists analyzed 29 water samples taken at monitoring points in Mykolaiv Oblast. These included samples from open water bodies, seawater, and wastewater.

No cholera vibrio (Vibrio cholerae) was detected in any of the tested samples. At the same time, a non-O1 cholera-like vibrio was found in some samples. Specialists emphasize that it is not a cholera pathogen but belongs to the natural inhabitants of aquatic environments. Under certain conditions, this microorganism can cause some acute intestinal infections, so its presence is taken into account during epidemiological surveillance.

Separately, the region also monitors disease incidence among the population. During the week, 77 cases of acute intestinal infections were registered — the same number as in the previous seven days. Thus, the incidence level has not changed. Necessary anti-epidemic measures were implemented, and the cholera pathogen was also not found when patients were examined.

Health professionals remind that the risk of intestinal infections increases in summer. For prevention they recommend:

  • consume only safe water;
  • thoroughly wash vegetables, fruits, and berries;
  • maintain personal hygiene;
  • do not swim in water bodies where it is prohibited or that are not intended for recreation.

As of today, no cases of cholera have been registered in Mykolaiv Oblast. The epidemiological situation remains stable and under control.

Previously, water quality at beaches in the Mykolaiv region was checked, and authorities reported where it is safe to swim.
